“We had a great time and we will definitely visit again”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2011

The accommodations were lovely, comfortable, and clean. A scrumptious breakfast of fresh fruit, bacon and french toast setup the day for great hiking and riding. Pam is a fabulous hostess and cook. Larry entertained us with stories on the history of the house and the previous home owner and family members. Pam and Larry provided us with a tour of the house. We met their 7 newest family members. Their Jack Russell had seven puppies a couple of weeks ago. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will look forward to the next visit.

Room Tip: All the rooms and cabins are very nice.

Pam and Larry provided us with a carefree weekend to have our wedding. They were easy going and treated us as more than guest.
They allowed our children and dogs to roam free without worry in there 3 acre fenced yard.
It was a memorable weekend.
We will definitely be back to see them soon.

My boyfriend, my dog, and I made a last minute decision to go out for the weekend. We ended up going to the 74 Ranch in JAsper! Absoluetly beautiful and simply relaxing! Ariel (the dog) had a blast with Larry and Pam's dogs. She slept the whole ride home! Chris and I just enjoyed laying around the ranch on the very nicely furnished porch area. Our room,The Blie Room, was beautiful and cool. The next morning we woke up for breakfast, made by Maria, excellent cook! Everything was perfect. Larry and Pam were very kind and made us feel at home. The Hospitality was amazing.Chris and I have every intention of going back and enjoying ourselfs again!

My husband and I wanted to find a nice and quiet place to vacation/relax before our baby is to be born. I am so glad that I landed on the Seventy-four Ranch. I have read other reviews and in the front of the property is highway 53 but wasn't overbearing. We stayed in the Overlook Suite and barely heard any traffic. If we did, it wasn't disturbing at all. Maybe it is different if lodging in the main house.

Pam and Larry made us feel very comfortable during our stay. They took out the time to sit and chat with us and play with our two dogs. Also, Manny, the man who works the farm was also quite hospitable. He asked if we needed anything or to show us around the acres of property to go see the horses and cattle. He would also bring out espresso or coffee as well as sit and pet our dogs as well.

There are many places to lounge on the ranch for relaxtion. I think I spent most of the time on the back porch with my crochet watching all the dogs romp and play.

If you do travel with your dogs, there is a 3 acre fenced-in area for them to run free. I never worried about their safety. The other dogs (large and small) welcomed the dogs the moment we arrived. Our dogs settled in very comfortably. Even when we left to eat in Jasper, we let our dogs stay outside in the area and I didn't have one worry. They were also allowed to go in and out of the house. Luckily, we were the only guests so I didn't worry about disturbing others.

The Overlook was quite comfy except it was a little warm. What can one expect with 100+ degree weather. The bed was soft and was easy to fall asleep. THere is a beautiful private porch in the Suite. Just open the french doors and take a seat outside and look at the beautiful countryside. Even with the heat, there was still a nice breeze.

The breakfast was also quite delicious. Pam took her time to tell us the history of the house and area. She was quite inviting to chat with and wanted to share her stories.

I will definitey travel here again. Our dogs loved it. My husband and I felt completely welcomed and comfortable.

Comment for 74 Ranch
Will we recommend the 74 ranch to friends and family? Only to those wanting to ride horses. Were the owners helpful, and friendly? Pam was the first evening; the staff tolerable. Were the rooms presented as advertised on the website? Yes. Was the property and views as presented on the website? Yes but noisy. Was the breakfast meal as presented on the website? Yes. Did we go away with memories that will last a lifetime? Oh, yes but we are trying to lose them.

The home page of the 74 Ranch website clearly states “As you drive down the country lane into the Seventy-four Ranch, you'll see the lovely rolling foothills of the North Georgia Mountains.” This is a true statement. What is not said is the “country lane” runs about 200 feet from road to gate; and the parking is adjacent to the shoulder or right-of-way of Georgia State Highway 53. You must carry your own luggage across the yard to your cabin. “Comfy beds, pillows, plush towels” are there as stated. There are three acres are secured by fencing to keep dogs contained. We did not participate in star gazing, fishing*, riding, roping, star gazing or marshmallow roast and can make no comment about these activities. We did have a substantial breakfast each morning with plenty of appropriate size servings.

The Seventy Four webpage describing the “Saddle House” states as follows; “it has four double bunk beds and a private bath with a large step-in shower.” The page also states; “The Saddle House is right next to the Porch Cabin. The two rooms are connected through the bathroom. Although we only ever rent one room or the other, so that guests don’t have to share a bath, families or groups can choose to rent both rooms at the same time.” This policy was not the case our first night. We had to share the bathroom with the occupants of the adjoining Saddle House. When we asked Pam Butler, the owner, she said that was not the case and if there was a problem we could have a room upstairs in the Butler – Cape House. Having a Labrador Retriever that is un-able to climb stairs, we declined and stayed in the Porch Cabin. The website description of the Porch Cabin states: “The private bathroom is wheel chair accessible, featuring grab bars and a step-in shower.” Again, it was not “private” unto us. The second night was not really a problem as the Saddle House was empty.

What is not included in the descriptions is the Porch Cabin, Saddle Room, and The Overlook Room are located next to a chain link fence. The Hinton Volunteer Fire Department is on the other side of the fence. The Pickins County Sherriff’s Office is across the road. The Porch Cabin, Saddle Room, and Overlook are less than 200 feet from the center of the intersection of Georgia Highway 53 and Georgia Highway 136 connector. Highway 53 could be the best road route between Calhoun and Cartersville in the west, to Jasper, Georgia in the east. The highway 136 connector leads to Ellijay, GA. Large eighteen wheel tractor trailer trucks travel these roads. The trucks seen on this route are Piggly-Wiggly, Ingles, Kroger, Ebby-Brown, BP Tanker trucks, Raceway tanker trucks and various logging trucks. I personally observed these passing by day and night. There were other noisy vehicles, pickup trucks, motorcycles and motorcycle clubs or gangs. There was not a 5 minute interval without some motorized vehicle passing by. Vehicles on Highway 136 had to stop at the intersection before turning left or right. This creates the noise of gear and motor changes as trucks gain speed. Then there were the engine compression release brakes on some of the trucks, commonly known as “JAKE Brakes”. These use the truck exhaust gases under pressure to activate the braking system. Some municipalities ban the use of “JAKE Brakes” in residential areas, as they are overly loud and startling when activated.

We saw the owners, Pam and Larry Butler the Friday night we arrived. Pam was accommodating in getting us settled in the Porch Cabin. The next morning, Larry came on the back porch to announce to those waiting, “the coffee was ready”. That would be the only time that Saturday we would see Larry Butler. We did not see Pam again the rest of the weekend. After Saturday’s breakfast, we left for most of the day for hiking trails. We returned late Saturday afternoon, and had a question about where to eat. We could not find anyone in the house. After dinner in Jasper, we returned expecting to participate in the marshmallow roast; other guest had signed up for it as well. There was no roast, or campfire, and the house was dark. We were not particularly interested in the campfire and went directly to the cabin. Larry was in the kitchen Sunday morning and said coffee was ready. That was the last we saw of him as his staff cooked and served breakfast.

If you like quaint, charming, rustic, ranch type place to stay and board horses, then 74 Ranch could be the place for you. If you seek peace, quite, and tranquility, then you might try finding a yoga retreat. One more thing, you must at least like dogs running through your room.

You can get a satellite view of the ranch by searching for a map of Hinton, GA. The ranch is just right of the large white roof building. Google will give you a road view of the intersection.

Good Luck and Happy Travels

*footnote: If the fishing lake is the farm pond seen from the pasture gate, then I’ll pass. The pasture drains into this pond which has a green tint to the water.

My wife and I were looking forward to a restful, stress free weekend and an opportunity to reconnect, however our experience with this establishment and it's management were quite the opposite. The accomodations are not nestled in the Ga foothills in a peaceful environment, they are located within a stones throw of Hwy 53. and a cross road of Hwy 515. We arrived in the late afternoon hoping the intial concerns about traffic noise would die down but it was constant and 18 wheelers frequent this route apparently. While advertised as rustic but plush the room was charming but rustic aspect is taken too far when it comes to no insulation and the lack of adequate climate control. We attempted our stay in Nov. a wood stove on the opposite side of the room from the bed (20+ feet away) was the only heat source which required hourly refueling to attempt to keep the room warm. The out side temp was in the low 30's, you could poke the tip of your finger through some of the gaps in this rustic built room. I imagine the summer months would be equally unpleasant. Oh and did I mention what appeared to be a firehouse from the side view of our "overlook" room. We attempted to tough it out but the truck noise, shaking of the structure plus inadequate climate control forced us to depart early, leave a note and make the 90 min trek home.

After a few hours of sleep we called the manager Tonya and described our dissatisfaction with the environment and inadequate climate control of our accomodations and indicated we would not be returning for our second nite. We expected an offer of a refund but that did not occur, we had to ask and then the response did not indicate a commitment of this nature. Tonya was very rude when we expressed our intial dissatifction and in the 3 follow-up calls to attempt to remedy a billing for the full amount. She essetially hung up on both my wife and I when attempting to follow-up the situation. We travel a few times a year and have never had such an experience as a patron or guest. The matter is still unresolved. A big lesson for the future reasearch more on location and seek out reviews. We selected this B&B based on a write up in the Atlanta Journal, boy is that writer going to get an earful.

My boyfriend proposed in Jasper, GA, and we spent the week-end at the ranch. Pam and Larry, the owners of the ranch were extremely helpful in helping my fiancee give a romantic touch to the Cowboy cabin, where we stayed. Throughout the week-end they were very hospitable and accommodating.

We felt welcomed and part of their life. We loved the bonfire and the ghost stories Pam and Larry shared with the guests and enjoyed all the time we spent with them. It was truly a unique experience that you won't find at other B&B's. We felt home away from home.

We also enjoyed riding horses with Manny and Beth. Manny and Larry even gave my fiancee lasso lessons! The ranch is dog -friendly and we loved having our dogs with us for the week-end.

We hope to go back soon. The ranch is a little gem we discovered!
