Unicoi State Park & Lodge

I've been going to the Unicoi Lodge for years and despite the cut backs in the budgets for state parks, they seem to be keeping up well! The staff is very friendly and helpful. The hiking trails are kept up nicely and the food is always good! I will keep coming back as long as they keep up the good work!!

The quality of food at this once nice restaurant has declined dramatically. The food is average at best. It is does not even compare with a Golden Corral buffet. If you want a much wider variety and better tasting food, find a Golden Corral. There is not one in the area, but any of the local fast food places would be better. We used to drive about an hour and half from our home up the road in SC, just to eat at this place it was so good. It would not be worth a 5 minute trip from Helen, if you are staying there. They need to get some cooks that know how to cook and quite trying to serve alcohol. Even though, if you were drunk enough you might not realize how mundane and canned the food has gotten. Did not stay in the lodge, but the area does not look overly clean.

We stayed in a "barrell cottage" at Unicoi State Park the last weekend of July 2011. We had 3 children with us ages 1, 9, and 10. The 9 and 10 year old loved the barrell cottage and we had a great weekend. The park is very near Ana Ruby Falls which has a .4 mile paved trail to a nice waterfall (we easily pushed a stroller). Also you are only 5 minutes from where you can hop on a tube to float the Chattahoochee - highly recommended for kids 3 and up - lots of fun! We enjoyed a hayride on the day we checked in at no charge. Unicoi has a lot to offer and we also swam at the swimming beach and hiked a trail to a nice playground.

Here are the things that weren't so nice:
The walk from the car to our cabin was a LONG walk down a lot of stairs. This made it very difficult and cumbersome to load/unload the car - not to mention hauling a cooler and a toddler. I don't recommend this for folks with small children and/or anyone who doesn't want a long hike to get stuff in and out of the cabin. (there are other cabins at Unicoi that don't have a long walk - I recommend that you call and talk to someone if the hike will be a problem for you.) The food in the lodge was not good - pricey buffet with not so great food and terrible service. (the only reason we ate there was because our cabin was not ready and we were starving and there was no other option) Check in is not until 4pm and you probably won't be able to check in any earlier. The kitchen in the cabin doesn't have much in the way of pots/pans/plates/silverware, etc. I am far from a gourmet cook and I had difficulty finding what I needed to make sausage and pancakes. If there is something that you want to cook - make sure that you take everything that you will need!

Overall, we enjoyed our stay but I will ask more questions next time to make sure the accommodations are accessible and that we will be able to load/unload with less difficulty.

After getting a little stir crazy last winter, my girlfriend and I chose Unicoi on a whim to stay for the weekend. We didn't have very high expectations, so there was really nothing to disappoint us. However, we were pleasantly surprised with what we found!

Generally, the lodge needs some work. The buildings are dingy and the rooms could use some updating. But we didn't come for luxury. We came for hiking, with many moderate to strenuous trails within walking distance of the lodge.

Oh! And I ended up proposing to her on the trail! So far, it's working out ok!

We also enjoyed the restaurant very much. Service was great and the food was better than we expected for a buffet, especially the never-ending trout. It was really a plus to have good food in the lodge, even if it was a little less than gourmet.

So, if you're looking for a place that is comfortable and convenient, then this is the place. It would probably be a little boring if you don't do some hiking, however. The town of Helen is a bit odd as well! It's like some Swiss village in the middle of Georgia. I was a bit put off by it's overwhelmingly touristy persona.

Stayed this week in a 2 bedroom/2 bath cottage with grandchildren. While the cabin was a little remote for activities we did enjoy the cabin (full kitchen) there was no TV or cell service coverage. My grandchildren were surprised that they survived for 3 days without these conveniences. We were just down the road from Anna Ruby Falls.

Room Tip: A place to get away from things.

We have been having our family reunions here for every other year......this was our third time. We rent out Lodge C. This year I was a little disappointed. What happened to the porch furniture that was on the front porch...back porch had a few chairs and a small table, but was filled with bees and someone got stung. No refrigerators in rooms as promised and some rooms only had ONE chair, some two. The bathrooms are extremely small and no handicap person could use them. Soap, lotion, shampoo furnished in bathroom is the pits........we all had to go buy soap to shower. TV in our room would not work with remote control.......had to physically get up and turn on or off and change channels. Some of lighting in room did not work at all, even after we bought light bulbs. We will be back again in two years and hope for some improvement in building C. Food in Lodge was okay, but had to wait for refills even after we made reservations seven months in advance and gave a number that would be feed. As much as I love this place..........needs improvement! WARNING No internet in Lodges of cabins......have to travel to main lodge second floor to get service. A router in each building would be an idea.

The food was good, the scones stood out as tasty. The big problem I had was the service was non-existant. It was a buffet, so all we really needed was to have a refill on our beverages occasionally throughout the meal. They brought beverages and ignored us until the absolute end of the meal (I guess to try to get a tip!). There was plenty of staff around, but all looked like they did NOT want to be there. It made me uncomfortable and want to leave.
