Helendorf River Inn and Conference Center
Ranked #4 of 18 Hotels in Helen

The worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Bugs and roaches, sticky furninture and carpet, beds as hard as floors, grimy handprints on the walls. Had we not been totally exhausted at check in we would have found another hotel. Fruitflies flittering everywhere, roach crawling across the table the morning we checked out, tv was 19 inch poor reception and remote could only be used while holding the batteries in place. The room was a no smoking room but all the staff walks around with a cigarette in their mouth and the smell wafts into the rooms. Wouldn't let my daughter in the icky pool. Looking for a beautiful riverview and ability to walk into the river, all we saw were thousands of people tubing, gating blocking entrance into river and trash everywhere. This place may have been #1 in 1977 but for 2011 it needs to be condemned. Tried to make a formal complaint to the desk who just shrugged it off as 'oh well.'

1. Room had an offensive smell as soon as we opened the door.
2. Room was dark, dingy, and drab. In need of updating to bring it out of the 1970's.
3. Shower rod wasn't even hung up, just laying on the ridge of the shower walls, which resulted in the rod rolling/falling off multiple times during our 2 night stay.
4. Shower cold water faucet broken and falling off.
5. Wallpaper peeling, ceiling water stains and cracks visible.
6. Small table in room was falling apart, very wobbly and had a definite lean to it.
7. Previous guest's hair was lying in the shower drain upon our arrival.

Overall "ewww" factor remained high. This was one mini-vacation that I preferred NOT to spend time relaxing in our room. The less time we had to spend in there, the better.

I will say the lady at checkin was very friendly and hospitable. However that can not excuse the horrible accomodations. We would never return and will always recommend against this place in the future.

The hotel was very clean and the staff was friendly and accomodating. We stayed 2 nights in a King with balcony. The balcony was great, right over the river, excellent view. The hotel was a bit outdated, but they kept it very clean. I would definately stay there again. Family atmosphere, but not alot of noise late in the night. We parked our car when we got there and was able to walk to everything. Just a good location and clean friendly hotel.

We had a great stay at the Helendorf River Inn. The staff was fantastic, especially Nelson at the front desk (3:00 -11:00). The maintenance staff were my heros. I ran into a little car trouble and they came to my rescue. We stayed in a Standard room and had plenty of space. The beds were also comfortable. The area for the Continental breakfast is small, but durable. They serve your basis breakfast, which was fine with us. The hotel does not have room service if that's one of the amenities you are looking for, but all of the eating places are within walking distance. We are looking foward to going back and staying at this hotel again.

We stopped by Helen for a couple nights on way to Savannah. We stayed at the Helendorf which was a nice place to stay, It was no Hilton bed but it was comfortable. It has a small kitchen but no pots and pans to use.
At night we would open the screen door going out on our 2nd story deck so we could have the cool breeze plus ear the rippling of the river. During the day older children and adults would float down the shallow river.
It was an easy walk up to the main area where the stores and restaurants were located.
I would say this is not a place for small children. There were several unique store plus good restaurants.
Our remote control \in Room 320 didnt work even after they replaced the battery.
We did enjoy the two days we had there and even walked up the mountain close by. Tthey said it was an easy walk but it was still steep in several places. Some people were having problems reaching the waterfall.
While there they just had a SOWO convention the week before and they had managed to break a bottle in the indoor pool so it was closed. The Inn had to have the pool drained to clean out the glass.

This Inn was wonderful! Friendly and helpful staff. The room was very clean, the bed was extremely comfortable, We enjoyed the balcony overlooking the river. It is an older Inn and doesn't have fancy flat screen TV's and Wifi is available only in the lobby. But neither of those things were an issue for us. It was within walking distance to many restaurants and shops. We enjoyed ourselves very much and intend to return again.

I am writing this from one fo the rooms right now. We checked in very late last night so I honestly didn't look around much as we made our way to our room. What a nice treat I woke up too! You have the option of rooming riverside or across the road in its own little shop and dine area. The buildings like like they were picked right up out of a little Alpine village and dropped right here. So cute! And there are little pictures painted on the walls of German Fairytales, if our daughter were with us she'd really like that. It looks like Snow White could pop around the corner at any time. We left the kids at home this time so hubby and I are in a nice single bed room with a pretty woodland view outside our window. I think we'll be back with the kids next time. The staff has all be very nice and helpfull, the breakfast is nothing special but it gets the job done. Juice, cereal and coffee kind of thing. That's ok though, leaves plenty of room for all the great looking resturants!

The rates seem quite resonable and my family always looks for the non-chain, family run places to stay when we travel. This is a older hotel but it is clean, roomy and in good shape. Free WiFi is always a plus!
