After reading some negative reviews of this newest of Georgia State parks we decided to try camping here anyway and found it to be a wonderful campground. It is well set up for today's camper who largely camp in some sort of vehicle, large or small. The sites are paved with a gravel area for table, fire pit with grill, and lantern post. A very beneficial extra that we had not experienced before was a filtered in-ground area for gray water disposal. The sites are well placed with many drive through sites and easy access for back-in sites. Also many sites are suitable for tents. The camp site fringes and sides of the roads are covered with mulch in keeping with the natural feeling of the park as well as protection from the red Georgia clay in wet weather. The park personnel were pleasant and helpful, the grounds were well kept, and the entire park was an enjoyable place to be. There are many trails throughout the park for hiking and some paved for biking. We enjoyed the campground and the park so much that we extended our visit 3 more nights, and plan to return during our next trip to Georgia.

This is the newest Georgia Stare Park near Gainesville, Georgia, not Florida. Camp sites are either close together or you can choose a more remote site. All have asphalt parking pads and gravel sitting areas attached or adjacent with a picnic table. There is a combination fire ring/grill at each site. New plantings of native trees between sites will ensure more privacy over time. There was a nice trail in the woods bordering the lake. Terrain is piedmont pine and hardwoods with no invasive species and amazingly, no poison ivy. There are several fishing piers and a clean white sand beach for swimming. I think this would be a great place for a group or family reunion.

I was really excited about the opening of Don Carter State Park so I reserved 2 sites for the Labor Day Weekend. When we drove up to the sites I was totally disappointed:( The sites are too close together!! There isn't any room to even tie a dog up. They have cut down all the trees and layed so much asphalt that it was very hot. The beach or trails are not in walking distance so to do anything you have to drive. It is a beautiful park with lots of room but they did not plan the design very well.

I could easily give this park a rating of five had not been for the extremely small beach area. If you are looking for a park which supports hiking, trail walking, bike riding, fishing, RV Overnighting, Camping, the I would strongly suggest The Don Carter State Park in Gainesville GA. I choose to give this a rating of four only because I believe that they have the space to accommodate a much larger beach area and did not make use of it. The beach is man made on the Lake Lanier. It was beautifully done with impeccable white sand. It's one of Georgia's most recent attractions.

Don Carter Park is Georgia’s newest state park, as well as the first state park on 38,000-acre Lake Lanier. Situated on the north end of the reservoir, the park offers outstanding recreation for water lovers. Guests can stay cool at a large, sand swimming beach with bath house. Boat ramps provide quick access to the lake, while a paved, multi-use trail welcome hikers and bikers to explore the hardwood forest.

This new park offers several choices for overnight getaways as well. Two-bedroom cabins are perched on wooded hillsides near the lake. One campground is designed specifically for RVs, while another primitive camping area is just for tents and hammocks. The campground and cottage loop are gated, providing access to overnight guests only.

The hours of operation are as follow:-
Park Hours: 7 a.m.–10 p.m.
Office Hours: 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
Parking: $5
Cottages $110 - $160/night
RV docking range from $26 - $29
Picnic Shelters are also available to rental.
