“Really fun for the kids”

Reviewed March 20, 2014

The first 30-45 min we were there, there was a lull in the train traffic... we began the wonder what the big deal was. So we wandered around the cute town nearby the tracks and low and behold - the trains did indeed come! There were about six back to back within 15 minutes. The train watching area was really nicely set up with a covered platform and some seating and the folks that gather there are very personable! Lots of nice conversations with strangers. Our kids loved the close, yet safe distance from the trains - the force and noise gave lasting memories for our little ones. You can make a day of a visit here or just an hour or so - either way you'll enjoy it.

This platform has wifi, restrooms and a comfortable place to watch the trains heading though town. There are fans for when its hot and chairs to sit and just take in the sights

If you even like watching trains and live in the south-east US this is the place to visit. I have been to this spot three times with my daughter and we have both had a great time. There are so many places to sit and watch trains.

1. Viewing platform. This location is great because it has both a radio scanner and WiFi so you can know what is coming and surf the internet in between trains. This location also has a nice fenced in area to protect the 'little ones', picnic tables and chairs. This is the epitome of comfort in train watching. The only thing I do not like about this viewing location is it is 85' from the tracks and so I do not feel as 'connected' to the trains at this area.

2. Picnic pavilion north of the museum. This location is nice and if I am looking to have lunch with my daughter I will have it here. It is easy to step out from the pavilion to get a closer look at the passing traffic and provides nice shade and is really pleasant.

3. Museum East Field (I do not have a better name). There area which has couple benches and picnic tables provides the best close-up view. The museum has parallel parking spaces available on the west side of the building as well as pull-in spaces on the south. You can basically watch trains 20' from the track at this location. This also has a bit of a better angle of view north-south. The platform has trees that obstruct the north view about 500' away. The museum also features a gazebo and alligator sculpture on the south side of the property which is good for pictures, comfort, and play (which is important to brining kids).

Other features of the area are of course the museum which features some interesting information about the funnel as well as other rail history material. No charge for admission, but as practice I always leave a small donation.

Restroom facilities are provided at the museum and at a restroom building adjacent to the platform. There is a lot of parking available at both sides of the tracks. My recommendation is to park at the museum, look at what is inside, and then watch some trains from the east field. After that walk to the platform which is about 0.1 miles and watch a few trains from the platform. This gives the best of both worlds.

In the end anyone from a slight enthusiast to a true railfan will have a great time at this location. Remember; get your kids into trains early and often. 

It's a wonderful place to watch trains from. With a viewing platform, parking, bathrooms and good food near by. The train depot is just across the tracks. It's a great place to meet other railfans and take great pictures.
