Description: Ntounias restaurant is a traditional Cretan restaurant with authentic tastes cooked in the wood oven, even the bread is hand made and cooked in the restaurant. Most ingredients are taken from the family farm and many are harvested from the neighboring area. Stelios is a unique person with love for life and cooking, and this spirit you can see, smell and taste in his food! When you visit Ntounias, take your time as we will produce to you to taste our plates, which are different every day. The restaurant is located at Drakona village, east of Therisso village at Keramia, Chania prefecture in west Crete.

Having lived in Crete for many years, this taverna is a very special place where we always take guests and friends for the real feel of Cretan food. Stelios, the owner, makes you very welcome, the food is either home grown or locally purchased and tastes out of this world. The drive from Chania, through the Theriso gorge is spectacular. Continue through the village of Theriso and turn left at the T junction. Follow the road and you can't miss Ntounias, there is always something cooking in an earthenware pot outside. Enjoy this superb taverna.

If you are visiting the Chania area of Crete do visit the Village of Drakona in the mountains south of Chania. There you will find the rustic restaurant Ntounias. The food is country cooking in ceramic pots and wood ovens with dishes that you may not find elsewhere and more a reflection of Cretan country food. Tasty, and served by the family in a very friendly manner. You may not find a wide choice but, it is different and the quality is good. The prices too are very reasonable

We drove about 45 minutes from our hotel, Casa Delfino (an excellent hotel), to Ntounias. The drive was beautiful, full of trees and wild life...but the real treat was at this amazing place to eat. The owner there, who you can see in pictures, was an amazing host. He made sure we were comfortable the second we walked in, because everyone there were locals and he noticed we may have felt a bit on edge (after all, this is a restaurant in the mountains, in a village, in the middle of no where...nothing like your typical tourist place).

After sitting down, we were asked if we want to see a menu or come to the kitchen and see the food. We asked to see the kitchen, of course. There was traditional, old school, down to earth good cooking going on in there!! The woman working behind the wood burning stoves was so nice to us, and recommended we get a small plate of each different item they had, which again we happily agreed.

The food started to come to our table, and long story short we had the best 3 hours of our lives eating the best food possible and hearing great live music. The energy in the room was so positive, everyone was happy to be there eating such amazing food. The meats are from the owner's own farm, probably prepared the day before. Any items with milk, such as yogurts or cheeses are usually from his animals as well...and RAW. Real, raw yogurt. Juicy tender meat with so much flavor, cooked to perfection. Veggies grown on his land, made with spices that will have you licking your fingers (can you imagine licking your fingers after eating broccoli and cauliflower?). He made sure our table was never empty, continually giving us little treats, drinks, sweets, cheeses...even the last hour he made sure we had a steady supply of oranges to eat while we enjoyed the live music from what seemed like a local band.

As a previous reviewer said, this place is the real deal. We are on Crete for 4 days, and returning to this restaurant for a second time today. Nothing will come close to the food and love here, and my perspective on food has changed.

We cannot give enough compliments to the people who make this establishment a possibility.
