“A rare find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2012

This is the real Greece. This is the food they mean when they talk about the Mediterranean diet and Crete. This is Greek hospitality as it used to be before the EU dirtied the waters. Simple, basic, authentic, generous and real.
The food is fresh, seasonal, and truly local... made the way food was cooked in much of Greece 20 or 30 years ago. Simply prepared with local ingredients on wood fire in terracotta pots mostly.
IF you want a taste of authentic Cretan country/rustic cooking, go to Dounias.
No ridiculous 20 page menus. Just ask Stelios what he's got, or better yet, ask him to bring you a sampling of what he's cooked that day. You will be happily satisfied at the end of your meal.
His homemade white wine is excellent as well.
The new Greek minister of Tourism should get a clue and pay this place a visit rather than worrying about building new golf courses. This is what the country needs more of, not another spa/resort.

“I would go to Crete only for Dounias”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2012

Everything is raised and cultivated by the owner!!!
Milk, youghourt, cheese from the cow, vegetables from the garden, bread from the oven, honey from the bee hives of the family, wine from the cellar!
I don't have anything to add, only that this place is an attraction itself!
Don't forget to chat with owner for a while, you might change the way you see the world!

“A different Culinary Experience..”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2012

Basically, I dont have anything else to add, as all the reviewers before me have covered all you need to know about this restaraunt.. It is basically 30-40 minutes drive from Chania old port, and is worth a visit if you are in the area (i.e. its 10 minutes drive from Therissos etc).
Subsequently, its a different food experience, as this is not the kind of food you will find at a normal restaurant but the taste of the food is simply amazing.
Highly Recommended!!

“This is Crete at it's best”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

In the foothills of the White Mountains a few kilometres from Chania and close to historic Therisso is the picturesque village of Drakona where you will find the resataurant named Ntounias with a sign outside by the roadside that states 'THIS IS THE TRADITIONAL GASTRONOMIC CENTRE OF CRETAN DIET'!
It is not just the ambiance of traditional cooking methods using earthenware pots on open fires of burning olive wood but also the quality and freshness of the ingredients that Stelios uses in his 'slow food' recipes day in and day out which ensures that you will be back for more.
There are as many as five different flours used to make the bread which is made in the kitchen and of course baked in a wood burning oven and served warm at your table.
I f you ask for a salad it will be made from what is available from the garden on the day and you will not be disappointed. Even chips are cooked in an earthenware pot on an open fire!
Traditional does not mean boring and a number of dishes clearly have Stelio's mark that demonstrate his love of cooking and producing tasting and interesting plates of food, chestnut stifado or wild boar and potaoes are but a few of such dishes.
We have been coming here for years and every time we have sampled something new and delicious but above all the quality of the food remains unchanged.
Don't ask for the menu, just go into the kitchen and see the various dishes simmering away in clay pots on open fire, then you have the tough task of choosing what to have. We have solved this problem over the years by going to Ntounias with a party of friends so we can sample a bit of everything between us.
If you are looking for 'silver service' you will be disappointed, but if you want to experience traditional mouthwatering dishes in a wonderful location with views to die for you will probably do what we do, keep coming back for more!

“Fabulous 'real' food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2012

Stubbled upon this spot while out motorcycling and thoroughly enjoyed a two hour break!
Excellent food, wide ranging and choosen by a visit to the kitchen. Wonderful staff and a real treasure house of eating pleasure. Best 'mountain' tea and no end of good honest slow cooked food - the wild boar cooked in fresh orange juice was stupendous. Real enjoyable time, could have stayed all day if stomach had allowed. Don't pass by - in fact, go out of your way to call.
