Review of Rock Eagle Mound

Rock Eagle Mound
Reviewed August 19, 2013

First of all there is no charge to stop by and see the effigy. There are signs to explain why the mound is there and how it was built and what they have found in it. It is a great piece of native american history, it's easy to get to, not much walking, not handicapped accessible and when you climb the stairs to the top of the observation tower you have a great view!

This is a quick jaunt off I-20 and a nice add-on to a trip to Madison. It's a great WPA site that provided work for the unemployed during the Great Depression, and still provides a free and interesting staycation venue for those short of cash from the Great Recession.
There are picnic tables and hiking trails once you've gazed long enough at the eagle effigy.
I loved the tower built from granite blocks and local timber.
It's sad that vandals have broken out the windows, but they left the pretty metal frames in the top ones. You can't really appreciate the eagle without climbing the tower. We wondered if the Native Americans built a wooden one for that purpose.

I've been intrigued by this since I was young so we took the kiddos to visit. Parking is nearby and so are picnic tables. The girls wandered around and enjoyed the beautiful day and park. It is a quick stop so don't plan to spend all day - the surrounding 4H park is gorgeous.

You must be able to climb quite a few steps to see the eagle mound from a vantage point that it looks like an eagle.

This is an interesting archeological feature easily accessible from US 441/US 129 near Eatonton. You may want to research online before visiting as little information is available at the site. There is the mound, an observation tower, parking lot, and a nearby picnic area and that is about all. It is part of the large Rock Eagle 4H Center.
