Overall a nice place, but there were problems with a lot of little details primarily stemming from the overwork of a front desk agent.
When I arrived it took a considerable amount of time for her to find my reservation. After all the usual business of checking-in, I walked away from my desk with my key. That was the problem, only my key, not the key envelope or strip of paper that many Choice Hotels give. I had to go back to the desk to get my room number and later call down for the internet information.
At 6:21am an odd chirping noise penetrated my ear plugs. When I achieved sufficient consciousness to identify the noise, it was the battery low signal from the smoke detector. I found this odd as I thought all hotels were required to have hard wired fire alarms. Finally trudging to the front desk, I found the same agent who had checked me in 12 hours earlier. She informed me that no the smoke detector is not hard wired; it has a battery and she's not sure she knows how to change it or if she has a spare. (Keep in mind this is on a Sunday so someone from maintenance is not coming in later.) As she is juggling breakfast preparation and not offering to do anything, I return to my room and remove the battery. It is hard wired. It's still chirping. The battery is apparently in case of power failure. Returning the battery and various jiggling does not improve the situation. Finally I decide to get dressed and sit in the lobby to finish the work I was going to do before returning to the road. Returning to sleep is really not an option.
Breakfast is OK. Some eggs are burnt. Waffle batter cups aren't full enough to fill the waffle iron. Of the two sausage links I took, one was warm and one was still ice cold in the center.
The front desk agent disappeared for a while. She wasn't even in the breakfast prep room where I found her earlier. When she finally reappeared, I updated her on the battery situation (no expression of concern) and my intent to sit in the breakfast area. I also indicated a concern over the increasing noise level. She encouraged me to use the business "center", a desk in an alcove just off the lobby, really not like to be quieter, a fact she seemed oblivious to.
As I said, a nice enough roadside hotel but the chirping smoke detector and the front desk agent's lack of expression of concern really ruined it. As she was still here when I checked out a few hours later, maybe she just needs some time off.
