“Dillard Chalets - A Near Miss”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

We've stayed in 4 different Dillard chalets in the past few years. So many good things to say about the chalets, but with a little extra attention everything would be a plus. The location is excellent; the views are very nice; the chalets are very large and roomy; nice bathrooms. But the equipment and furnishings are not up to par. This was particularly noticeable in our last family vacation in the chalet that sleeps 14. I loved the 3 levels, the fireplaces upstairs and downstairs, the three bathrooms, the washer and dryer. However, since we had 12 people, the kitchen was very poorly equipped - not enough of anything. Pans were scratched and scarred; fortunately we ate out a lot. However, we would probably stay again, because of the roominess and the great location. The Dillard House was fun for our family meals, especially since it was Christmas time and the decorations made it even more fun. Having no Internet and phone service was a plus because the 6 teens had to interact with their family! But for adults that might be a drawback.

Room Tip: Do not chose the small A-frame - it is too small even for a couple - 1/2 fridge and 2 burner stove...

We went to the Dillard House for a wedding and spent the night in the Oak Lawn building. There were 3 of us and 2 queen sized beds. It was a large room and very comfortable, complete with a big tv, dvd player, and mini fridge. There were bottles of water in the fridge and Seattle's Best coffee. Property has a nice pool and hot tub, petting zoo for kids, horses to pet/ride, and carriage ride around the area. Very relaxing stay!

We've visted NC/GA in the fall for years to enjoy the leaves changing. We typically rent a one of the Chalet's through the Dillard House. We like them because you can get the feel you're in the woods withought the nailbiting drive up the mountain. We always rent one of hte smallest cabins and it is perfect for 2, BUT there is only a double bed on the level so sleeping can be a litte "cozy."

Room Tip: Bring your own pillows!!!! There are only two on the bed and they're flat like pancakes!

My family, all 14 of us, just returned from a 4 night stay at The Dillard House to celebrate my parent's 50th wedding anniversary. Although we reserved Chalet 21, which was quite nice, there was water damage in the basement. We were immediately moved to Chalet 5 and since it had fewer bathrooms we were given access to a second chalet as well. Even with the prompt response to our complaint we were disappointed that our accommodations were not what we had planned. After speaking to him I am pleased to say Mr. John Dillard and his staff made great concessions to make our trip memorable. Thank you to all the staff at The Dillard House.

This review is for the Dillard House Stables on the propery of Dillard House restaurant & Inn...we did not stay overnight and we didn't eat at the restaurant on this trip (although we have eaten at the restaurant before - good food but you definitely need to be HUNGRY). This trip we only went for the horseback riding.

We made a reservation earlier in the week for the one hour river tour - easy to do and just a cellphone # will hold your reservation. It was fun - taking the horses into the river was definitely different. Be prepared for wet feet/shoes for sure and the bottom half of my jeans below the knee were also wet - I'm glad I had brought a change of clothes. The price was reasonable at $45. The tour guide was very friendly and she took great care with two kids who were on the tour without their parents. The horses were beautiful and well behaved - enough spirit to be fun, but not scary.

We bought the professional pics at the end for $10 each - they were better than any we took and for that price we got the printed version as well as electronic. The mountains were beautiful in the background, the fields and fences were all pretty - the biggest downside was the muddy trail, but it's been super wet in this area lately, so it was understandable. I would recommend the river tour - I don't think the alternative field tour would be as exciting.

It's difficult to describe the Dillard House, which consists of a lodge building with reception and a really gorgeous, totally enormous dining room, and a series of outbuildings that house different room types, plus a petting zoo, stables, pool, tennis and I don't know what else. It looks a lot like a country inn, a little like a camp dormitory, and a tiny bit like a motel. Inside, the rooms are not exactly Laura Ashley country, but not modern, either. The good news is that they're really spacious, with views out the back sliding glass door to serene pastures and horses. The rockers on the porch are a nice touch. Everything works, including internet (in some buildings), while still reminding you of a summer vacation rental with slamming screen doors. The restaurant seems to be THE place for the locals to go for dinner, so there can be lines, especially for weekend breakfasts. Speaking of which, come hungry and come prepared to face down everything you've ever heard about southern mountain cooking, because ALL of it will be plunked down on your table, family style.
Staff are usually friendly, but can be rather short when faced with long lines of folks waiting for their attention. They are incredibly accommodating with special requests like adjoining rooms and late checkout.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the horse pasture have internet.

My wife and I have been going to the NC mountains for 13 years now. About half of those times we would eat and stay at the DH on our way to Asheville. All I can say is "NEVER AGAIN". Everybody we came in contact with was rude and very unwelcoming. There were no "hellos", no smiles, no eye contact. The front desk staff as well as the restaurant staff acted as if we were bothering them. The room next to us had a dog and it barked incessantly. When I called the front desk, the snotty front desk clerk said, "Well that IS a dog friendly room!" OK, well can you tell them to keep their dog quiet? Also, we couldn't enjoy our back patio because the area around us smelled of human waste.
At our check-out, I asked for a customer comment card. The clerk tore one out of a book, handed it to me, and said she would give it to the owner. I put my cell # and my email on the card in the hope of receiving a call to discuss our stay. I'm still waiting. So either it got thrown away OR the owner could care less about how the place is run.
For what you pay for food and lodging, (we spent about $300 for a 24 hour stay) we will keep our money and spend it at the Biltmore. At least they know how to treat their guests.
