This place is highly over rated, over priced and over cooked food. You are placed a table with random folks. While some people claim to make new friends and exchange email addresses, that was not our experience. One person we were forced to share a table with, should have been home in bed, forcing fluids and taking aspirin. This person sneezed several times before I actually got up and left the table. One sneeze in the bend of his arm, one under the neck of his undershirt and two or three into his dinner napkin. He continued to wipe his mouth with his napkin, even after blowing his nose into it. Call me a snob if you choose, but this is not the environment, in which, I choose to eat. The food even though it was abundant and great variety, had a lot of grease and vegetables were cooked to a mush. This is not what most folks think of as good cooking. The desserts, banana pudding and fruit cobbler are not included in the price of the "All you can eat menu"

Family style, friendly staff, excellent food made the night for us. Roast beef was my favorite and the selection of dishes placed before us was fun. Yep, it should be a place to experience when in Dahlonega, Ga.

I had not been to the Smith House in many years but it was good to be back. The folks are very friendly and the family-style dining is a fun change of pace. You get to meet new people and enjoy a very good (but not quite excellent) Southern-style meal that is All-you-can-eat for a fixed price that is reasonable. Their specialty is fried chicken but they included ham and roast beef with a good handful of vegetables and rolls of different sorts. When we were there, they had very good strawberry shortcake for dessert. My only complaint is that I would have liked a selection of desserts to choose from. Be sure to take 5 minutes and see the rediscovered gold mine shaft that was found in the basement during some construction work. It is pretty cool and they have some artifacts on display also. If you're meeting people for your meal or just want to relax, you can also enjoy the front porch rocking chairs.

We ate here for the first time in Oct and really enjoyed the family style dinner. Platters of fried chicken, roast pork, beef stew, 4 or 5 different veggies and the biscuits!! Dessert was peach cobbler - shared our very large table with new friends and had a really enjoyable evening!

We ate lunch on consecutive days at two very famous landmark Southern restaurants in North Georgia. Each serves family style, all-you-can-eat with a wide variety of dishes. Each is a fixed-price menu. Each is the venerable old granddaddy of restaurants in its own town. And the two are 75 miles apart by geography but quite close together in quality and desirability.

They first bring you drinks and ask if you have any preferences on the entrees. Then bread and perhaps a little coleslaw. Very quickly, a blizzard of bowls hits your table -- lima beans, greens, squash casserole, yams, potatoes and gravy, onion rings, black-eyed peas, macaroni & cheese, and of course, fried okra. Entrees include fried chicken, pot roast, catfish, and ham – not just one dish. You get all of them. All you can eat.

It becomes a big challenge to save room for dessert.

At Smith House in Dahlonega, lunch is served in the basement adjacent to an old gold mine shaft. The fried chicken is both crispy and tasty, among the best I ever found. I can also rave about the cream style corn and the collards. The Kentucky Wonder beans are most excellent. And dessert? I didn’t get that far.

The Dillard House takes grand prize for atmosphere, set on a hilltop overlooking fields and mountains, and oozing history from every column. The country ham is among the best anywhere (not store-bought ham/water added). The catfish is great too. The acorn squash casserole is the must-try vegetable. Macaroni & cheese and blackberry cobbler also get high marks.

Overall, Smith House wins for food and Dillard House wins for atmosphere and service. But you cannot go wrong either place.
