“Great intro to local history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 17, 2012

Dahlonega is all about the historic gold mining and this small but thorough museum in the old court house does a great job, with exhibits on equipment, methods, the chronology of the gold rush and much else. And you can see gold flecks in the bricks of the building!

“Georgia Gold Museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2012

On a recent trip to Dahlonega, Georgia to visit a old gold mine, we were told of the Gold Museum in the downtown square in Dahlonega. The square has a lot of shops and restaurants to explore.
The Gold Museum was once, The Old Lumpkin County Court House. The red brick building built in 1836 has some very striking features as you approach it and is the oldest courthouse in Georgia. You enter on the first floor and are greeted by Museum personnel who start to tell you all you need to know about this visit. You can tour all the exhibits downstairs and then proceed upstairs to see more and view a short video of the country’s first gold rush. Downstairs there is a large vault directly behind the security desk with some actual gold and gold coins inside of it. It was very impressive to me. I particularly liked the over 100 year old baskets that some local Indians used many years ago. As you enter the upstairs which is mostly the actual old court house, you can see the old Judges Chamber, the old Jury Room and the old court room. The old court room is where you sit and view the 25 minute film explaining the discovery of gold and what it did for the county. If you like museums and old historic buildings, then this is a must see. I was very pleased with the experience and the cost.

“Great Information”

I enjoyed the movie and seeing bricks that had gold flakes in the wall. The place was very small though, so there weren't many exhibits. It was still a good experience though, and the souvenirs were cute.
