Owner description: The National Civil War Naval Museum tells the story of the Sailors, Soldiers, and Civilians, both Free and Enslaved as affected by the Navies of the American Civil War and provides a repository for relevant archives and artifacts on the subject, for all generations of the public. The Museum uses all available media systems/distribution platforms and live interpretation in furtherance of this mission. Located in Columbus, Georgia, the National Civil War Naval Museum overlooks the Chattahoochee River. We house the largest surviving Confederate warship, the CSS Jackson, as well as the the wreckage of the CSS Chattahoochee. Other exhibits include a full scale ship replica of the USS Water Witch, a replica of the USS Hartford with its berth deck, ward room and captain's cabin, an actual cutter or "ship's boat" from the USS Hartford, a full scale replica of the USS Monitor's famous turret, and an immersive panoramic dockside exhibit recreating Plymouth, North Carolina, complete with an exterior and interior view of the CSS Albemarle. Among our many artifacts, we have the largest collection of Civil War Naval-related flags on display in the country. The collection includes various flags from ships and coastal forts, signal flags and Admirals' pennants. Our timeline exhibit takes you month by month through the war showing naval events and features many of the museum's most rare artifacts, such as the uniform coat of Captain Catesby Jones and Admiral Farragut's two-star hat insignia. Exquisitely detailed Models of many famous Civil War ships are on the timeline including the CSS David, CSS Albemarle and the CSS Atlanta, which is located just opposite the huge 25-foot wide flag that was flying over the ship the day it was captured. We host a range of events throughout the year with an emphasis on museum theatre and historic character interpretation. Additionally, there are living history events, tours, cannon firings, weapons demonstrations, local history projects and more.

“Great Civil War learning experience.”

IF visiting Columbus-Ft Benning and have the time, this is a great addition to add to the list of things to do. For a reasonable entrance fee, you can step into the past, to the civil war and learn about the Naval forces of both sides, the battles they fought and the sacrifices made. The information presented, shows another side of the war between the North and South. I had a great time, and being interested in the Civil War, learned some new information I wasn't aware of. They have a lot of artifacts from the civil war to see. Strong recommendation to visit it.

This was an awesome place for learning. It was small but worth it. The old weapons and tools were very authentic

“Just OK - nothing to write home about”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 1, 2014

I preferred the National Infantry Museum. The guy at the ticket counter did not tell me that a AAA discount was even greater than a military discount - so I paid for 2 AAA-discounted tickets at $6 each and 1 military-discounted ticket at $6.50. It would have been nice if he had told me I could get 3 AAA-discounted tickets for just $6 each. Annoying!

“Moderate Size and Educational”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

We enjoyed visiting for the purpose of US Naval history and maritime technology. My family enjoyed the technology for the time period and well organized. They have put some work and found some resources for this collection. Hope they will expand with more hands on equipment and more mock-ups. Some of the videos could be updated with technology. I recommend as a starting point for extensive research.

“Small but Nice”

This is a pretty small museum, but very nicely done. The only disappointment was that we missed seeing the ship out front. We didn't realize we could go out and see it.
