Quite simply the best campsite on Lake Maggiore!!
Having viewed four or five sites on our arrival we'd almost given up on finding a site where we weren't going to feel like sardines......our small two-person tent being squeezed between huge campervans. Italian sites like to cram as many in as humanly possible without much consideration for comfort or privacy and tend to put tents in amongst vans on hardcore pitches.
We found Camping Lido Toce at the end of a strip containing a number of such depressing sites....we drove down a fairly long unmade-up road and arrived at the site which appeared quiet and spacious. Upon further investigation we were delighted to find a very green, grassy and open site with few patrons, it continues down to the lake with a private beach, where we found most of the campers. We plumped for a pitch nearer the reception which was huge and allowed us to 'spread out' without disturbing anyone. The site is very clean and, having been refurbished in 2009, the toilet/shower blocks are very clean and well maintained. There's a shop/café/restaurant on site where one can either eat-in or order a takeaway pizza or buy the essentials.
Within easy reach there's a large supermarket and the town with access to lake boat trips and the wonderful Isola Bella is about five to ten minutes drive away.
We had a fantastic three days here and it was only the promise of exploring more of Italy which dragged us away.
