Owner description: This beautiful plantation represents the history and culture of Georgia’s rice coast. In the early 1800s, William Brailsford of Charleston carved a rice plantation from marshes along the Altamaha River. The plantation and its inhabitants were part of the genteel low country society that developed during the antebellum period. While many factors made rice cultivation increasingly difficult in the years after the Civil War, the family continued to grow rice until 1913.The enterprising siblings of the fifth generation at Hofwyl-Broadfield resolved to start a dairy rather than sell their family home. The efforts of Gratz, Miriam and Ophelia Dent led to the preservation of their family legacy. Ophelia was the last heir to the rich traditions of her ancestors, and she left the plantation to the state of Georgia in 1973.A museum features silver from the family collection and a model of Hofwyl-Broadfield during its heyday. A brief film on the plantation’s history is shown before visitors walk a short trail to the antebellum home. A guided tour allows visitors to see the home as Ophelia kept it with family heirlooms, 18th and 19th century furniture and Cantonese china. A stop on the Colonial Coast Birding Trail, this is an excellent spot to look for herons, egrets, ibis and painted buntings. A nature trail that leads back to the Visitors Center along the edge of the marsh where rice once flourished.

“Visit of 1800s Rice Plantation in the South”
Reviewed May 10, 2013

This plantation was in the family for 5 generations before the last past away in 1973. The furniture is from the entire 5 generations, not just of the time period. Very impressive to walk through and hear about the history from the docent who was a big guy with a beard that relishes telling about the history. Thoroughly enjoyed the visit but watch out for the deer flies as they are big and numerous.

If you enjoy hearing and learning of the history of plantations in the South during the 1800s and into the 1900s, you will enjoy this attraction,.

“natural setting, not crowded”
Reviewed May 9, 2013

This is kind of off the beaten path...lovely plantation house with out buildings and such. Very nice walking path around the property and out to the former rice patties. Not at all crowded. take a picnic basket and eat on the lawn around the house. Hours are very limited due to budget cuts....nice place to chill out and self-guide your tour. kepp going north on US 17 to mudcat Charlie's for lunch (at 2 way fish camp), then next plantation house on left on Darien river where Nature Conservancy offices are. Finish up in Darien at Fort King George.

“Excellent history experience”
Reviewed May 8, 2013

Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation is an excellent presentation of an old rice plantation. The tour (by Ranger Randy) was extremely interesting and informative. The admiration the ranger felt for the property, furnishing and family were evident. The original furnishings and history of the family made me feel like part of the plantation. The oak trees are a wonder to gaze. The ranger continued after the tour to elaborate on the history and answered all questions. A definite tour for any age.

“Great attraction”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

The Hofyl-Broadfield Plantation is well worth a visit because it is an intact old rice plantation. The grounds are in good shape, the main residence has its original furnishings, and the tour of the residence is leisurely conducted and comprehensive. I strongly recommend that you take the time to visit this plantation.

“Authentic experience”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

We arrived at the plantation as some of the first, that day, and this meant that our tour of the house, was a private one, with only my wife and me.
The house represents an interesting history in so many ways.
We recommend to take the tour of the main house, here you will learn the story of the latest owner and her employee, as story which could have inspired the movie "Driving miss Daisy"
Be aware that there are many angry flies on the plantation, but as long as you move around it isn't to bad
