We were delighted to see that a Thai restaurant was opening on Newcastle St. in historic downtown Brunswick. We are totally committed to the restoration and revitalization that is happening there and love Tipsy's as well as True Vine Wine Shop and Market on Newcastle. We also make sure and attend every First Friday and make reservations for Stratton Hall and absolutely love our experience there. But back to Thai Basil. It has only recently opened. We waited until they had their full liquor license and dined there this past Wednesday. We were absolutely blown away first of all by the ambience. Exposed brick walls on one side, high ceilings with cork walls on the other side. They have preserved the archecticure of the building with the huge front doors. We are originally from NYC and this would have rivaled many a restaurant as far as decor. The bathrooms were beautifully decorated and used turkish hand towels instead of paper.
So you say. What about the food. The menu was thoughtful. You need not be a true Thai lover to eat here.
The Taste of Basil appetizer was enough for two. The spring rolls were perfection. The chicken and beef satay were wonderful. We had the duck entree and scallps and each one was done to perfection. We talked with the owner and he will be extending the wine menu in the coming weeks. Please understand that they have only just opened and are busily tweaking everything from menus to service and beyond. We found the staff to be friendly and willing to please.
Like any new restaurant they need time to breathe. But ultimately I think this is a place you will return to again and again.
