“Disappointed”
Reviewed October 19, 2009

The cabin we stayed in was not clean, it had a terrible smell, musty. After looking at reviews after the fact, I see the same sheets are on the bed that were in the picture from one year ago. This would have been a hint had we looked at reviews prior to our trip. (our fault) The roads continue to be terrible and even dangerous. Huge disappointment for our weekend in the mountains.

We have stayed at 'The Last Resort" for many years. Friends and family have also stayed there, and had less than shining experiences, but we continued to visit. We will NEVER STAY THERE AGAIN. In our opinion, a decade ago, it was a clean dependable operation. The last few years, it has gone farther and farther down hill. The last three times we stayed there, things were progressively worse. We encountered maintenance problems that were ignored by on-site property managers, horrible insect issues that were blamed on the climate, rodent droppings in multiple cabins, dirty cabins, dirty jacuzzis, and an attitude on site that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The roads leading to your cabin may cause damage to your vehicle if it is not a high clearance truck. The maintenance vehicles of the maids and maintenance staff are lacking mufflers, (destroyed by the roads?) and wake you up every morning as they begin thier routes. The furnishings are home-made and sub-par when compared to tica cabins, or other cabin agencies in the area. There is a lot of construction traffic and noise daily, as they are expanding in most areas. The last time we stayed, there were unauthorized/fraudulent charges placed on our credit card in addition to problems experienced on site. American Express took care of the FRAUD, but will never return. This is an example of a good business gone terribly bad in our opinion. We will never waste our money here again. Many locations are privately owned, but ALL locations are managed by the "on site family." This family is less than friendly if you have a problem.
Sincerely,
A former repeat guest.

PS We NEVER would put a dog in a Jacuzzi- as the owners claim in the forum section- can you say dead dog? Perhaps all the hair was a result of NOT CLEANING THE JACUZZI prior to our visit? Or maybe it was human hair?

PSS We had spent THOUSANDS of dollars here in the years prior, but never again.

There are hundreds of newer, better furnished, cheaper cabins with better views all over that area now.

We stayed in the Ottowah cabin. We picked the Last Resort because of the private hot tub in each cabin and we picked the Ottowah because it was pet friendly. We really enjoyed our stay. After reading an old discussion on tripadvisor I was concerned about the cleanliness, but i must say, I was pleasently surprised. The place was nice & clean. There were a few bugs but I guess that's to be expected when staying in a wood cabin no matter how nice it is. The cabin was extremely private (we could not see any of the other cabins in any direction from our cabin). The hot tub was huge and seemed very clean. A great place to relax!

  • Liked — very private
  • Disliked — dirt road leading to cabins are very bumpy and sometimes steep
