This unique well-built cabin was just what we needed to get away from a very stressful few months managing the construction of our home near the city of San Juan, getting caught in snarling traffic jams, waiting in lines everywhere, and suffering from the record breaking humid heat of the city.
For starters, the one-of-a-kind round cabin is located in a very secluded setting, requiring a walk down to it from PR 120. The owners were open and honest and provided pictures of what to expect, and we were up for the challenge. We heeded their advice and packed lightly, brought backpacks, and small cooler (what goes down must come back up!). The parking area for our vehicle was monitored by very nice neighbors who were even aware of our arrival and provided a friendly greeting. Once we arrived at the cabin, we felt completely secluded from civilization.
The cabin was clean and stocked with all the essentials. We had a nice time just admiring all of the handmade furniture and furnishings the owners implemented to make the cabin cozy. Come to find out, Dennis is a cabinetmaker by trade and Kathy has a creative Etsy side job.
We enjoyed sitting by the campfire just off the large covered patio at night, relaxing after a day trip to many of the beautiful beaches on the Southwest side of PR, or shopping for local fruits, vegetables, plants, and frituras, at the flea markets in San German and Sabana Grande. Not being familiar with the area, it was very helpful that the owners provide recommendations and even directions to local favorite destinations, and we were not disappointed. We had a great meal at La Casona, an old coffee plantation, and had wonderful sandwiches at the Cafeteria in Sabana Grande.
The weather is at least 10 degrees cooler than the city, and a blanket of dreamy clouds wrap you in them before you retire to a restful sleep, and are there to greet you in the morning before they lift off as the sun rises.
The drive up the mountain to the property is typical: winding, narrow in some spots, covered by bamboo in areas, with beautiful views to the valleys below and the ocean beyond. There are many places along the way to stop and take pictures.
In closing, this property is perfect for the traveler who wants to unplug for a while, to get back to nature and appreciate all that it offers us, or for the bird watcher (the property abuts the Maricao natural reserve on three sides), or for the traveler who enjoys camping (although this would be considered glamorous camping). This property is not perfect for the city slicker who wants to pull up to a concrete parking spot, check in at the front desk, and park his/her seat in a lounge chair by the pool while surfing the internet.
After three nights/four days at this unique property, we were rested, renewed, and ready to embrace the world again ... but look forward to escaping to this peaceful spot again and again!
