“Nice beach”
Review of Batibou Beach

Reviewed August 6, 2013

Dominica is not known for its beaches, but we enjoyed going to this beach, and it was all for ourselves.

This is serious crime in the Calabashie area, Batibou Beach area. Please do not go there for any reason whatsoever! My husband and I stopped there yesterday on our way to the airport in Melville Hall. The beaches are breathtaking, but not worth the experience that we endured. We were unaware (until later) that theft, robberies, rapes and other crimes take place there quite often. Thieves watched us hide our keys, then took my backpack (that was hidden), our wallets, credit cards, my wedding ring(we were on our honeymoon for a month) cash, clothes, books, Samsung Galaxy Cell Phones and other items. We filed a police report with Calabishie Police, but have heard nothing yet. I pray the police find most of our items and prosecute those$%*^%$#$$$$!And this was the second time that we were robbed in three weeks.
Please do not come to this island until the crime is under control. Dominica has security guards in all the wrong areas. Security needs to be at the beaches and other tourist sites so we feel safe and want to return. It's not a cheap flight to get here. Dominica needs to get their act together so they can start attracting tourists again. Dominica needs tourism, but tourists won't come if you don't protect them!!!

Batibou has always been our favorite beach on Dominica, but like many we had become wary due to a couple of very unfortunate crimes which occurred at this isolated spot a couple of years ago. I'm happy to report the addition of a locally run beach bar has been a huge success, thanks to proprietress Jackie Douglas. Fine, inexpensive local meals, snacks and drinks are available. No purchase is required/expected, but I'd encourage everyone to support this venture, which has made Batibou safe again!

We weren't sure if we should visit Batibou Beach or not. On the one hand we heard it was the best beach on Dominica, and on the other, there were some horror stories on various websites talking about muggings and theft. After a day on the island (based out of Calibishie) we were referred to a local guide named Nigel and decided to check it out! He brought us down to the beach from 9am-11am and there was never a moment that we didn't feel safe, but he did confirm that there had been a few incidences, mainly of theft simply because the area is so isolated (the road to get down there definitely requires a 4WD vehicle). However I will say that just from a few conversations with locals, it seems the government as well as the Dominican citizens are taking the situation quite seriously. A small bar has been built down there to provide additional security for tourists (however it is not open all the time).

It really was a little piece of paradise! Dominica is not known for its beaches, but this was one of our favorites on a trip that also took us to Antigua, Guadeloupe, Martinique and St. Lucia. For those looking for a beach more off the beaten track then Batibou Beach is for you and I would FULLY recommend using Nigel as your guide. Everyone in the area knows him, and he is really a joy to be around! He explained what many of the surrounding trees were, climbed a palm tree to get us a fresh young coconut, and even gave me a local tip on how to keep mosquitoes away (and it worked!).

This was our favourite beach, ideal for relaxing on the shade, or sun bathing, water is crystal clear, and we were the only ones there, unbelievable! Highly recommended.
