We weren't sure if we should visit Batibou Beach or not. On the one hand we heard it was the best beach on Dominica, and on the other, there were some horror stories on various websites talking about muggings and theft. After a day on the island (based out of Calibishie) we were referred to a local guide named Nigel and decided to check it out! He brought us down to the beach from 9am-11am and there was never a moment that we didn't feel safe, but he did confirm that there had been a few incidences, mainly of theft simply because the area is so isolated (the road to get down there definitely requires a 4WD vehicle). However I will say that just from a few conversations with locals, it seems the government as well as the Dominican citizens are taking the situation quite seriously. A small bar has been built down there to provide additional security for tourists (however it is not open all the time).
It really was a little piece of paradise! Dominica is not known for its beaches, but this was one of our favorites on a trip that also took us to Antigua, Guadeloupe, Martinique and St. Lucia. For those looking for a beach more off the beaten track then Batibou Beach is for you and I would FULLY recommend using Nigel as your guide. Everyone in the area knows him, and he is really a joy to be around! He explained what many of the surrounding trees were, climbed a palm tree to get us a fresh young coconut, and even gave me a local tip on how to keep mosquitoes away (and it worked!).
