“Whether you like this place or not will depend what you want out of your holiday”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2014

If what you would like is to switch off and relax and not care how much you spend in the process, then this is the place for you. All your needs will be catered for by the lovely Jen and her team. Breakfast, dinner, a walk in the grounds, tour excursions, the lot!

If however you are a bit of an independent traveller and like making your own arrangements, then perhaps consider alternatives before staying at this place. Internet does not work in the room, only outside in the garden and gets switched off during storms, which I must say are quite common in a tropical climate. We also felt a bit uncomfortable saying no to breakfast and dinner when we wanted to do our own thing. We were told to try the dinner there first before deciding where else to go.

As regards value, well even though the room is nice it is quite basic, and the price of meals is a bit expensive when compared to other restaurants on the island. You get charged for everything, even a welcome drink. The rooms do not have insect screens, just a mosquito net, so just beware of that. Other than that they were clean and well maintained although not brand new. The location is about 45 drive from Roseau, and you would need a car to get there. It is a very nice setting, and most rooms have sea view.

Would i return? Overall I have mixed feelings. I would only go back if I had a large mountain of cash and just wanted my holiday to be organised by someone else and not care about emails and other things that need doing on the Internet. If you would like this kind of trip, then this is the perfect place for you. Otherwise I would suggest looking at other options.

In Dominica, the nature island we refer to two seasons “wet and dry”. Last November was particularly wet and now there is no rain at all. It is very rare to have mosquitos here as we regularly prevent standing water over six acres. The nets ensure that other flying insects don’t bother you and many guests never use them. We try to assist guests with activities on the island and happily answer all their questions as best we can. We would never claim to “do the lot”. Whatever guests ask of us, we simply do if we can. Wifi is difficult to have in the rooms due to the thick walls for hurricane protection. We often turn if off at night due to weather related power surges. Please know that had you said you wished to move on, we would certainly have let you go. As to the pricing, you had to be aware of the costs from our website and e-mails you received when you made your reservation. Our mission statement is simply “happy guests” and we are truly sorry you felt it necessary to write such an unhappy review.

Our stay at Zandoli Inn was idyllic. Designed in a simple but traditional style, with a host of architecturally loving subtle details, the whole inn sends out signals of relaxation and happiness from the moment you walk through the door. The views are breathtaking. I took almost 80 photographs, from beautiful details to panoramas, without going more than 50 steps from the door. The mountains rising from the sea -- looking like Bali Ha’i -- from the balcony of our room, the ocean dashing on the rocks at the end of the walk to the sea, the delicate chorus of plants on the way down to the pool, the rough-cut little alabaster statue over the door as you come down the stairs – everywhere my eyes lit, I saw something that made me want to take out my camera or hope that in my memory I would never forget this moment. We loved the atmosphere, the food, the rum punch, the chairs thoughtfully arranged to give sun or shade or both, the ease of planning, and the pace of life. We took two spectacular guided tours (we strongly recommend Sea Cat as a guide) to the top of Victoria Falls one day and to Ti Tou Gorge and Trafalgar Falls two days later, but our other days were so gorgeous and relaxing at the hotel that we wanted nothing more than to curl up in a chair or lounge and read, dip in the pool, have lunch, take a dip in the ocean, and read again, all in the most beautiful place I have ever been. If you thrill to the combination of simplicity and pure beauty, Zandoli Inn is the place for you.

Stayed 5 nights in April-May 2013 and 12 nights in Dec 2013-Jan 2014.
Perfectly positioned amid tropical forest overlooking the Ocean and picturesque bay. About 30 - 40 min from Roseau by car. No sand beach but stairs down to the stone beach where you can with some difficulties get into water and back - good for snorkelling and fishing. A good pool though not big. All is surrounded by flowers frequented by numerous hummingbirds. The owners Linda and Jenn with their friendly staff are most helpful in all the situations like finding and arranging a proper guide or even arranging a small private plane for transfer to Guadeluppe.

Magnificent views of Grand Bay, with ocean swimming for the agile. Quiet, forested, Tree orchids, nestled on sea cliff. Excellent dining, fine rum punches. Get Sea Cat to help you scramble upstream to amazing Victoria Falls - and swim behind the deluge -, tasting Dominica's fruits and spices (plus Manny's bread and anonymous moonshine) on the way.

This was my 2nd visit to Zandoli because of my great experience last year. Jenn and her staff has provided what we needed for my parents (72 y.o and 78 y.o.) and me. We loved rooms with great ocean view and cool breeze without air conditioner at night. Jenn is the iron chef in Dominica. Her three courses meal was the highest standard possible in the island and we could not have an idea to eat anywhere else. We felt like we were in a Michelin-Starred Restaurant in the wonderful Caribbean setting. Rooms were clean and neat with great Western standard which fulfilled our needs. When we had a plan to go to Titou Gorge, she rented life jackets for our convenience. She also arranged the best guide for our boiling lake hiking. Now, Zandoli is my second home in Caribbean island.

I really liked Zandoli. A lot of care has been taken in developing the inn to fit well with its surroundings and the views over Grand Bay are stunning to wake up to.

I got there after spending a week walking, canyoning and swmming round Dominica's beautiful natural attractions so it was a great place to unwind. It's a peaceful and secluded spot but my host Jenn had plenty of suggestions for things to do nearby (if you didn't fancy snorkelling off the rocks at the foot of the property or just relaxing by the plunge pool). You probably need a car to get to and from places while you're there but that's true of the island as whole - go with a sense of adventure and you won't be disappointed.

Jenn and her team were generous with their time and advice throughout my stay and the food and service were excellent (including the house rum punch). Zandoli is great base for exploring the south of Dominica, the hotel itself is stylishly understated and there is a warm a friendly atmosphere to complement the idyllic location. Enjoy.

Room Tip: The hotel has been well designed so that all the rooms have great views across the bay and plenty of...

It has taken me some time to write this review as we could not make our minds about the Zandoli Inn. It has a great many good points but also a few issues some of which guests ought to be aware of to set their expectations.

The Zandoli Inn is a small, 5 bedroom, hotel in a lovely position on the south coast. There is no beach but then Dominica has never been a beach island. Our room, and I think all the others, was large, airy and had a good shower and adequate bathroom. The balcony had good views of the sea.

The owner Jenn and her staff were very friendly and attentive and the standard of service was high.

So why the problem? Firstly the Inn is in an isolated location so in practice you have to take dinner in house. You are supposedly told in the morning what will be served that evening (there was only one option but presumably you could ask for something different in advance) of course the day you arrive you are faced with a fait accompli and in practice we did not discover what was being cooked until the evening on all three nights. We will eat most things so were not too bothered and during our stay ate lobster, octopus, fish and curry (goat I think) but I know of plenty of people who would find this "difficult" and would then feel awkward about making a fuss.
The food was fine, well presented but not very special. By the time 15% service and 15% tax had been added to the bill it was also quite expensive ($300US a night for the room with dinner and breakfast for two but excluding drinks).
If you want to be in the south of Dominica I am not sure where else you could stay, in exploring the area we did not come across any other strong candidates. Did we enjoy our stay? - Yes but if you are planning a visit to the Zandoli Inn just be prepared for the dining arrangements, perhaps ask what is on the menu in advance.
