My girlfriend and I just returned from our very enjoyable 10 day visit to Blue Moon. We would echo the other reviews in mentioning the beautiful location, proximity to a fabulous beach (Galleon), and extremely helpful owner (Shonnie). We spent much of our time visiting the nearby restaurants, snorkeling off Galleon, and hiking in the nearby hills. Shonnie is excellent at getting you settled in and advising on the best places to visit and how to get there.
I would mention that if you enjoy the outdoors and hiking at all, the climb up to Shirley Heights is not to be missed -- particularly the trail that takes you down by the shoreline and dumps you off at Galleon Beach. This particular section of trail was some of the most beautiful hiking I've ever done.
I would also note that the snorkeling off Galleon Beach (at the far end away from the main entrance) is very good, with many fish to be seen. Shonnie has snorkeling gear you can borrow.
My husband and I started our retirement and a one month vacation in this idyllic location before moving on to the BVIs. You are close enough to all the restaurants of English Harbour yet just around the corner in a most beautiful bay and beach where we swam every day with very few people around. The views from the top of the hill where the villas are located are possibly the best on the island. The villas are extremely well appointed and spacious for two. The owner Shonnie is a consummate host, guide and everything you could wish, going the extra mile to ensure her guests have everything they need. We now look back to our week at Blue Moon villas, as THE perfect quiet retreat within glorious surroundings.
One note regarding time of year - during the second week of May, many of the restaurants were starting to close down for the summer, but it we still found great cuisine with Shonnie's help.
We spent a fantastic two month extended holiday during January and February 2013. What could be nicer escaping the British winter and waking each morning to the sun coming up upon the boats in Freemans Bay, fringed by palm trees along Galleon Beach. This view is stunning seen through the filigree leaves of Shonnie's lobster-claw tree. This scene greeted us each morning for 53 days. Warm sun, shimmering seas And balmy breezes; the temperature constantly in the 80s.
We stayed in one of two villas that Shonnie and MIchael own above their own gardens. The outdoor shower with its tropical plants was a delight to use, followed by a dip in the jacuzzi pool each morning. The large veranda with its fantastic views became part of our outside living each day. We enjoyed cocktails as the sun went down listening to the tree-frogs and the tranquility of the national park behind us in the hills.
OK, so there are some steps to climb through Shonnie's tropical plants in order to reach this amazing location, and it is not something perhaps which you would choose to do in the heat of the midday sun. But then why would you, when you could be swimming and chilling out with the turtles in the bay below? If you needed to, however, there are little walls under the trees to sit on on your way up.
A complementary boat will take you across to English harbour and some fantastic little restaurants. Try Rum Baba, Abracadabra, Cloggie's at the Yacht Club for its Wednesday night BBQ, and of course the ever-famous Catherine's. You may of course choose to simply sit outside on your own veranda and dine alfresco, and be lucky enough, if she is in port, to see the very famous Maltese Falcon glide across the bay, like a magnificent contemporary Galleon. Either way, the super-yachts coming and going make an interesting and truly delightful scene.
Chloe the dog, with the most exquisite eyes, will accompany you on nature trails up to Shirley Heights. This is also another great location on a Sunday night for listening to the very talented Halcyon Steel Band. A real party night each Sunday; great music and great views while you sip rum punches.
One last thing, internet access is fantastic from up here.
How can we not return? This is a fabulous location with Shonnie and MIchael being great hosts.

The Blue Moon villas have fantastic views over Galleon Bay and the entrance to English Harbour. We stayed in the lower of the two villas. They are well presented, tastefully furnished and have everything you need. The gardens that surround the villas are stunning. The owner of Villa, Shonie is very welcoming and helpful (helping us with car hire, restaurants and so much more). We enjoyed the company of her dog Chloe on walks to beach and on the paths leading up to Shirley Heights. The villas are up a hill, with some stairs to negotiate, but the views make this more than worthwhile. We had a perfect holiday in Antigua, and Our stay at Blue Moon was central to our enjoyment. 11/10.
We stayed two weeks at Blue Moon Antigua and only wish we could have spent longer in what really is a special place.
I doubt this review can really do our overall experience justice but suffice it to say that everything was exceptional - the beautiful location, lovely villa, genuinely incredible views from our terrace, and of course our wonderful hosts Shonnie and Michael. Shonnie was a great help with advice, dinner reservations, booking trips for us - nothing was too much trouble. It was 5* hospitality.
A few highlights: falling asleep and waking up to the sounds of the sea and the local wildlife. Running up to Shirley Height early in the morning to watch the sun rise. Snorkelling just off Galleon Beach (the pillars of hercules) a minutes walk away, or watching for the turtles thy appeared each afternoon near Nelson's Dockyard. Watching the sunset from our terrace or the jacuzzi, with Montserrat in the distance. Making our own piña coladas, daiquiris, rum punch! The many restaurants in English Harbour...
Antigua itself was beautiful and we were able to explore a fair bit having rented a jeep - highly recommended if you want to see something of the island. Of course the many beaches were on the agenda (among other things) and of them all Half Moon bay was probably the highlight. Although Galleon Beach was an almost equally lovely spot.
In short, the 'acid test' - would we go back to Blue Moon? Definitely.
We stayed in the upper villa and our friends in the lower villa for 3 nights.
We rented a car for the week (do not EVER rent from Alamo . . . what a horrible experience). Our friends rental with Dollar was much, much better.
The drive from the airport to the villas was not too bad, however, the road conditions (narrow with pot holes and drop offs) and lack of signs, made it slightly difficult.
The parking pad at the villas was up a very steep driveway. We only drove our vehicle up and down this driveway on arrival and departure days to make transferring the luggage a little easier.
The villas are absolutely beautiful. . . nice decor, equipped with all the essentials, and very thought out.
The views from the villas are amazing, although there are a lot of steps to climb to get to this view. The climb was especially difficult with luggage or if you have bad knees, hips, etc.
We enjoyed sitting on the huge porch watching the birds, hummingbirds, geckos and boats going in and out. Chloe the dog also made her way up at least once a day to visit us.
We loved the outdoor shower, ice maker, and hot tub.
The villas do not have air conditioning which would have been nice especially for sleeping. There was usually a nice breeze running through the villas, however, they can get stuffy and super noisy throughout the night due to the crickets and birds in the morning. We also lost power one night and when the generator was on, it was super loud and sounded like it was inside our villa. We are not light sleepers and enjoy white noise so it was not a problem for us, however, I can see it being for some.
We really enjoyed English Harbour and the Falmouth area.
We ate at Cloggys, Shirley Heights on Sunday, Calabash, and Trappas. All were very good.
Shonnie was a great host and was there to provide any insight and help when needed.
I recommend Blue Moon Villas and would stay here again.
We don't usually do sun & beach vacations, but after staying at "Blue Moon Antigua", we may make it an annual event. We were looking for something a bit different from a resort holiday, and certainly found it by staying at Shonnie & Mike's rental villa.
We took advantage of Shonnie's airport pick-up, as well as having her arrange the car rental, both of which I would recommend. It just made arriving & leaving the island care-free & relaxing.
The villa (we stayed in the upper villa) was fantastic! It was clean and spacious, both inside & out, with all the amenities you would want. At the risk of sounding like "Goldilocks & the 3 Bears", the bed was very comfortable....not too firm, not too soft, but just right! The private outdoor shower was great, and the huge deck made it hard to leave each day.
The view from the villa was amazing...a very tranquil caribbean harbour scene, with Montserrat on the horizon.
The beach was a short walk downhill...uphill upon return, but that only meant you could indulge in one more blended fruit drink, guilt-free! The water was calm throughout our stay...perfect for swimming/snorkelling (although Antigua is better known for it's offshore snorkelling, you can swim with turtles from this beach).
A car will definitely add to your experience, especially if you like to explore the island, as we do, but the area around BLUE MOON ANTIGUA (English Harbour, Falmouth Harbour) is accessible via water & land taxi, and offers an amazing choice of great restaurants.
I think equally important, is Shonnie & Mike's invaluable information & recommendations regarding where to eat & things to do while in Antigua. For us, this gave us the amazing island experience we were looking for.
