“Best excursion and hosts ever!”

Paddles Snorkel and Kayak Eco Adventure
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 30, 2017 via mobile

My husband and I were THRILLED to celebrate our 10th anniversary on Antigua and to have the opportunity to visit Paddles for a 2nd time! We've literally been on a dozen or more Caribbean excursions and this has ALWAYS been our favorite! Our repeat trip did not disappoint! And... I contacted the owners via email in advance and asked of they'd help me surprise my husband with an anniversary cake. Much to my surprise - they made the day extra special for BOTH of us.... After an amazing trip swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking - we returned to their home where they'd made us a home made cake, reserved their private gazebo for our celebration, decorated it with gorgeous flowers, gifted us with a bottle of champagne and punch for the younger family members, and even gave us a lovely gift to honor our special day. It was by far - the highlight of our trip and SUCH a kind gesture. We live this excursion, the kind, generous hosts, the gorgeous setting and our new friends! We can't wait to go back!

I felt welcome and well cared for on this trip. Jenny met me at the parking lot and walked me to the gardens and chatted while we waited for the rest of the group. It was easy to find driving from the other side of the island. I loved paddling around the mangroves as there is so much to see along the shoreline. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the area and the local ecology. My preference is for a trip with lots of information and I wasn't disappointed. The equipment was in excellent condition and great attention was paid to safety.

The snorkeling was very good with lots of fish including a small barracuda and a stingray! Highly recommend this day trip.

The staff was awesome..they took us on a speed boat to the kayaking..then off to snorkel. Then we returned to the owners home for rum punch, banana bread, and coconut. So much fun!! Highly recommend for anyone coming out to take an excursion.

The entire excursion was about the people taking the excursion. It is a family operated business. The owners are there to greet you and host part of the day activities with you. The van ride takes you to the home of the owners. A beautiful location. From there you take a boat ride to the kayak location and go on a guided kayak ride that ends with a short kayak race back to the dock, lots of fun. then we boarded the boats again to go to the snorkeling location, where we first took a short hike to see sink holes and a beautiful ocean view. Then we had the choice to snorkel or just stay at the beach to swim. The snorkeling gear was in excellent condition and the site was perfect to see many beautiful fish and lots of coral. We then were taken back to the owners home for light refreshments .There we were offered a very refreshing cold cloth to remove the ocean salt from our faces. It was a simple but wonderful experience. As we enjoyed our refreshments we were sitting in their beautiful gardens with soft music playing in the background. I have been on many excursions and this one was by far the most enjoyable and pleasant of all. Because they made you feel like you were their guest.

After reading all the reviews, our expectations were high for this trip. Maybe the morning trips are better. Our trip started later in the day, around lunchtime. We left a little bit late due to waiting for one couple that was delayed, so perhaps that is what threw off the timing. In any case, we were rushed to the home that everyone talks about, but told to walk quickly down to the docks, making sure not to stop because the earlier tour was in the garden area. The trip to Bird Island was fast, and the short hike to the top was worth it, but we felt rushed. Snorkeling was beautiful as well - no real complaint there, except again it felt a bit rushed. No free water or drinks but we could buy some on the island. The kayaking was the biggest disappointment for us. Based on the description, we thought it would be a leisurely kayak through the mangroves, with time to stop and look at fish, turtles, sea urchins, etc, but that was not the case at all. Our guide took off around the mangroves and we all followed in what felt like a big race. We got a lot of exercise, but that's all we can say about it. Then we went back to the house, where we were given 1 small slice of banana bread and a small cup of punch (cups of water were also an option). We were able to sit for about 5 minutes before we were hustled back to the bus. There was no mention of free wifi, and we wouldn't have had any time to enjoy it even if there had been. I know this sounds very different from what others experienced, but it's how our day went. I guess the late start really affected the whole trip. It would have been nice to have a little slower pace and a relaxing time at the end instead of the rush. This was not a bad trip, but it was not the 5 star experience many others have reported. It was a solid average.

Thank you v. much for your comments. There are 2 things that factor into the efficiency and enjoyment of this trip. Firstly, afternoon trips must depart the pier on time, secondly and most importantly, is the time that a ship sails.
With an all aboard time of 4:30 for a 5:00 sailing, (which was your situation) all operators (as mandated by cruise ships), must return guests to the cruise pier by 4:15.
When your tour departed late from the pier, it immediately put pressure on us to get you back to the pier for 4:15.
Indeed, if you had left the pier at 11:45 you would have returned at the pier at 4:15 having experienced everything as described by others. We have a passion to please, so are disappointed when external factors disrupt the efficiency and enjoyment of the trip.
