Our family was visiting the Marriott Ocean Pointe resort last week and my wife and son (15) had been on the Segway tour that went through the city last year when we visited and wanted to do it again. My 11 year old daughter was very disappointed that she did not qualify to drive a Segway because of her age. But we found Green Motion Segway Tours that qualified riders based on weight and she did qualify for this Segway Tour and so we decided to try it out.
It was a blast! First of all, for first-timers like my daughter and myself it feels a lot safer to be traveling miles in a park rather than worrying about cars, curbs and pedestrians in the city. Because it is in a safer environment they are able to allow younger members of the family (as low as 10, possibly) based on the weight requirement for operating the Segway. So our whole family could participate.
My son was a little concerned that the experience would be more 'boring' because it was in a park instead of the city and would be 'slower' based on the fact that his younger sister could now participate. Reality proved those concerns to be completely invalid. Andrew, the manager and our tour guide, was very entertaining and extremely knowledgeable about the park and wildlife. But the one thing he really encouraged to the extent we wanted was to have 'fun' with the amazing capabilities of the Segway. We could go as fast or slow as we wanted, he showed us how to go 'off roading' with the Segway up and down hills and almost 'slalom skiing' through a small grassy area. My kids loved it... they weren't required to form a single line and just follow each other during the entire tour.
The tour included individual ear pieces with walkie talkies so we could communicate with each other and easily hear Andrew as he explained different things around the park. The Segways were new with 'comfort mats' to absorb more vibration. They each came with water and he took pictures using his iPad as well as our camera. He gave us any pictures that he took for free. Oh, and the entire experience was a lot less than the fee for the city tour.
All in all a very fun 2+ hours. We didn't see the ocean or cruise the city but the park was itself scenic and we saw a ton of different birds, turtles, etc. And we really got to enjoy 'playing' with what a Segway can do which was a lot of fun!
