My family and I visited Weeki Wachee Springs, home of the mermaids, in June 2005. We had heard of and seen pictures of this park, as my children's great-grandparents and great-great grandparents have been visitors to this park.
The park is not very large, but does have enough to do for the day. The park has 3 different shows featuring live mermaids swimming in the spring. You view the show through an underwater glass theatre. We saw 2 of the shows, the first being a classic mermaid show, and the 2nd being an enactment of "The Little Mermaid" story. The show also, surprisingly, comes into the theatre, as several of the actors make an appearance inside during the show. My children loved the shows.
There is also a boat ride down the river that is fed by the spring. That ride was very nice, as we saw a lot of different birds and fish. We were also told that there are manatees and river otters there, but we did not see them.
The other thing that makes this park worth visiting, is the included Buccaneer Bay water park. Because we arrived late, we did not use the water park. We also did not have time to see the bird show.
Weeki Wachee is located north of Tampa. It is a little out of the way, but overall, this classic Florida park is worth the visit. The grounds are nice, and the attractions remind me of the real Florida, compared to the theme parks of Orlando.
