“Walk Bdwalk & Joe Mich'l overlook winter '13 & every other yr”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

Pelican Island Wildlife Refuge takes you on a stroll out through the history of the U.S.'s wildlife refuges from the first one, in 1903, at this site, when you stroll the 3/4 mile boardwalk each way and watch for birds as you end up looking out toward Pelican Island. When you return, turn off toward Joe Michael Impound Trail and walk a mile each way (don't take entire trail) to overlook for a real treat! You won't believe the birds! The area is flooded every other area, and the bird life changes, especially in the winter. Go in the morning around 8:00 for best viewing when the birds are feeding, and enjoy!!!!! So, by following the above, you'll only walk about 3 1/2 miles total, although there are more trails if you want to walk greater distances. No bikes or pets here, as this is a wildlife refuge. :-)

“Pelican Island First National Wildlife refuge!”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

This place is breath taking the moment you start to travel on the graveled road you start catching sight of Ospreys and Hawks and of course many more birds.
There are many trails and beautiful garden with lots of pretty flowers, visited by many types of butterflies.
We got there late, so we could not enjoy the place like we would have wanted to, will definitely be heading there soon again. The board walk was one of my favorites because you see so much from up on the top, different water ways and a full view of Pelican Island.
If you are a serious hiker or just a weekend one like myself this is truly and enjoyable place to visit.

“A great bicycle destination”
Reviewed January 4, 2013

I rented a bicycle and rode down to Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. It was a nice destination place. I brought my binoculars but spent most of my time just enjoying the tropical vegetation that I do not usually get to see.

“Check It Out”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

The oldest national wildlife preserve in the country, dirt roads, great for hiking. Beautiful scenery, very peaceful, good bird watching.
