Pelican Island Wildlife Refuge takes you on a stroll out through the history of the U.S.'s wildlife refuges from the first one, in 1903, at this site, when you stroll the 3/4 mile boardwalk each way and watch for birds as you end up looking out toward Pelican Island. When you return, turn off toward Joe Michael Impound Trail and walk a mile each way (don't take entire trail) to overlook for a real treat! You won't believe the birds! The area is flooded every other area, and the bird life changes, especially in the winter. Go in the morning around 8:00 for best viewing when the birds are feeding, and enjoy!!!!! So, by following the above, you'll only walk about 3 1/2 miles total, although there are more trails if you want to walk greater distances. No bikes or pets here, as this is a wildlife refuge. :-)
