“Not Your Typical Disney Experience”
Reviewed December 14, 2013

My wife and I have stayed at Vero Beach Resort twice. The first time was just a few days added on at the end of a more traditional Orlando Disney vacation and the second time was for a relaxing week during a difficult year. For us, it's absolutely wonderful.

This is not a vacation for people who are trying to cram as much activity as they can into their vacation days, though; this is a place to sit, relax, and slow down. The staff has been uniformly excellent during our visits, the rooms clean and nice, and the property well-maintained. But any activity aside from enjoying the beach or the pool requires a bit of a drive and we found the on-site restaurants to be somewhat ordinary (and, in Disney tradition, on the expensive side for what you get).

But if you're willing to drive a bit, there are things to do. We would suggest that this is a vacation where you absolutely have to have a rental car and a willingness to put together your own schedule of events.

For us, Vero Beach Resort is a place to recharge from our stressful jobs and lives. We won't visit every year, but there are times when the quiet is exactly what we need.

My wife and I stayed here the first week in December. We are members of the Hilton Grand Vacations Club and were looking for a property on the Gulf Coast of Florida, but since nothing was available Hilton passed us off to RCI and they found availability at this Disney Resort. We were booked for 7 nights but ended up only staying for four. The resort itself was nice, well maintained and the room was clean. The good thing about staying on an off-season week like this is that it’s quiet. We were lucky in that we got a third floor room so we had a bit of ocean view, but one thing to note is that only the cottages have direct ocean views; the one bedroom suites are in larger buildings that sit further back from the ocean. This was a major consideration for us, and if we had known that booking a one bedroom meant there wasn’t even a chance of a direct ocean view, I don’t think we’d have booked here. The other downside for us was lack of much to do in the area. If you don’t want to golf or swim there aren’t a lot of alternatives. It’s quite a drive to Orlando or Palm Beach. I admit we aren’t typical of the kind of people normally staying at a Disney resort, but given that this one is located on a relatively quiet part of the Florida Atlantic Coast, we ran out of entertainment in three days. We ate at the on-site Shutters Restaurant a couple of times (reviewed separately) but did not try the more upscale Sonya’s. If you just want to lie on the beach, this is a great December getaway.

Room Tip: Only the cottages with multiple bedrooms have direct ocean views

First I will mention we are DVD Members, and have enjoyed being such for almost 10 years. We have been to Vero Beach a few times with our son's family, and returned this year for our grandchildren's spring break. It is truly a beach resort with everything right there. Restaurants, boat rentals, and naturally, activities for the children. Also loved the large balcony on the two bedroom. Great Disney service!

My husband and I chose this resort for a quiet staycation with our preschooler. We've stayed at WDW and been on DCL so we expected nothing but class with a touch of Disney whimsy. From the moment we arrived staff were excellent and helpful. However, the resort itself is a bit underwhelming. The Disney was truly understated to the point you might forget they own it. Our room was nice enough and clean but definitely needed an overhaul as it was starting to show wear and tear. The pool area was very large but the water was just a bit to chilly for an evening swim, which was tough to tell a 3 yr old! I hear there are plans to refurbish the pool which will be nice. Hopefully they will aldo consider a larger child's splash area. The rest of the resort was quiet, nice and well kept but overall had a very generic feel. No bells or whistles. Just basics. If you like the beach, the access here is good but the beach is narrow here and almost disappears at high tide. They have umbrellas, chairs, boards, etc to rent. Overall I give this resort only an average rating because I felt for the price it was just like staying at another resort. Personally I feel it lacked the attention to detail that really pulls the Disney brand apart from others.

Coming in December is the way it used to be in Disney World 20 years ago. Quiet. Place to yourself type atmosphere. Hopefully it will stay that way. Staff was very accommodating and helpful. Located right on the beach. Convenient drive to beach town.

Room Tip: No, I want it to myself

Best time for adults to visit the resort. This is the first time we visited early in December. The weather was cool ( for Miami standard) , the resort was not full and the spirit of Christmas was all over. It was a nice, relaxing time for my husband and me.

We are big fans of Disney's theming and attention to detail and this resort did not disappoint. We stayed two nights and took advantage of the great recreational opportunities by enjoying the heated pool and slide, playing corn hole, ping pong, miniature golf and hiking the nature trail around the little lake. We drove into Vero for dinner but brought breakfast, drinks and sandwich fixins to our room, which allowed us to save a bunch on food. We enjoyed the campfire, singalong and s'mores. Everyone we encountered on staff was pleasant and friendly. We would definitely stay again.
