Mercure London North Watford Hunton Park Hotel
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Hunton Bridge
Reviewed January 8, 2013

We got a great deal as a result of De Vere's winter sale. We've stayed at a few of their hotels and although this is not the best in our opinion (that is Staverton Park at Daventry) it has quite a lot going for it. The setting is sort of odd; backing on to Warner Brothers film studios where Harry Potter was filmed, which is an old airfield, and fronting on to an estate. But the hotel grounds mask the outside world effectively. The main building is an old mansion but the accommodation is in a new block. The rooms are smallish and the baths designed for people the size of jockeys but the rooms are clean and well equipped. One point; the doors bang noisily. If you are staying when there is a conference on and the place is full, take ear plugs if you don't want to be woken up early. It's always nice in a De Vere to have a coffee machine permanently available and operating in the public area, in this case next to the bar. The bar itself seemed to be open mainly in the evening. Stylish restaurant, although we ate out at a couple of local pubs. The countryside to the north, on the other side of the M25 is actualy rather attractive and there are some excellent walks. The hotel has a swimming pool and my wife reckoned it OK, but a tad small.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the top floor if you are on the north side. They will be quieter than the groun...

Dear djbcamb

thank you for your feedback.

I agree with you that De vere leisure offers are fantastic value for money. Hunton Park really has a lot going for it with great transport links to London, Warner Bros Studios behind us, very near the motorway but still a rustic location.

It was great to know that you enjoyed your stay.

kind regards

We stayed here last weekend when we went to visit the harry potter studio.
We were a little bit worried about the review which said it was noisy during the night, which isn't at all (obviously,it had always an idiot which his slapped door in the middle of the night, because they doesn't have nay respect for the other people, and forgot than they are in a hotel.)

We called them 2 days before to ask them if it had a weeding and if yes to put us in the room far from the restaurant, which they did. They also had an extra bed like we said.

The garden is beautiful, the principal building is so beautiful too. The temperature of the swimming pool was fine (which isn't the case in generally in the hotel!)

The staff was really attentive too, they were so nice and attentive! (and as a general pub/hotel manager 4 *, i know what im talking about!). We didn't eat at the restaurant during the evening, but we came to drink a glass at the bar of the hotel. They had a self service machine which does very good cappuccino, coffee etc..(and you can had some sirup if you want too!)

My only little point its, as they had a self service coffee machine, the bar doesn't too any irish coffee(which i would love on the evening) so may be they could do something to do that, but not a big deal we really enjoy our stay on our breakfast too.
If we need an other stay in the area, thats where we will stay definitely!

We live very local to this Hotel and we had enjoyed afternoon tea there which was excellent value too. We had Christmas lunch there for 12 and it was food to die for, excellent quality and value for money and Champagne reception too. The whole experience was a pleasure, from the Staff welcome and direction in the car park, then receiving you in the reception area taking coats all made a good first impression. The service was 2nd to none as well, Staff well experienced and schooled so each table was attended to. Well done to the whole hotel, Staff and Chefs. We did not stay at the hotel so cannot comment on accommodation. Book early for XMAS 2013 we will.

I stayed at the hotel for two nights while attending a training course.

The hotel is in the middle of nowhere, so if you're not driving you'll need to take a taxi. A taxi from Watford Junction station to the hotel cost about £10.

The hotel is typical of a conference hotel. The check-in took a little while as there were a number os us and there was some confusion over my room (I had replaced a different delegate and they had not been given my name), but this was resolved quickly.

The room was quite small, but comfortable. It was chilly at first, but the heating worked well when turned up high. The wi-fi seemed to work well and it had a nice large LCD TV. I did have a problem with tiny black insects in the bathroom (they seemed to like the damp), but it didn't bother me enough to complain. I wish I had. On the second night I left a wet towel on the bathroom floor and the little blighters were all over it come morning!

The food at the hotel was very nice, and there was a good selection at all meals.

I used the pool on one evening. It was closed until 6pm for lessons, but I was able to catch a quick swim before dinner. There were no attendants. The changing rooms were not very nice, though, and smelled of damp. The showers were not great and there were no toiletries. I threw my clothes on quickly and showered in my room.

As I was not paying for the room, I don't really know if it was good value or not, but it was fine for a work trip.

Dear Loulabelle44

thank you for your feedback.

You are right that our core business is conference & events. It was good to know that enjoyed the food and service. I have taken steps to resolve the insect problem in your room.

We stayed here for one night and attended the Christmas dinner and dance held in the marquee. Had I known, it was going to be this cold, I would have come appropriately dressed in jumper, jeans, woolly hat and scarf. The marquee had 2 heaters, which were set on low and totally inadequate. I was absolutely frozen for the entire evening, which totally ruined the night. To be honest, when they turned the heaters off, at the stroke of midnight and not a second after, they did us a favour, as we then moved into the warmth of the hotel. I would not recommend using this venue for Christmas parties, as the marquee should only be used in Summer, if it cannot be adequately heated.

Dear Strawberrysue

Thank you for your comment

Please accept my apology for the experience. We did about 4000 guests in our christmas party nights this year and receieved overwhelmingly positive feedback.

We do a lot of winter events in our marquee and with 3 airconditioning units, our marquee is well equipped to deal with winter dinners. There is a possibility that if you were sitting at the marquee entrance, you could have been effected by draft due to opening and closing of doors.

kind regards

Booked the room for 2 nights on De-Vere's winter sale special rate. The room was modern and clean but rather small - probably better suited to a single traveler... Walls seemed a bit thin as could hear (unpleasant) noises coming from the room next door. Pool rather small, shallow and the pool room a little dingy but at least it has one! Staff seemed friendly and the location and grounds lovely. All room facilities good. Overall good value for money and has good transport links into London.

The original house that is now a hotel dates back to 1810 and has a very impressive exterior and gravel drive. The interior is just as lovely but don’t expect original features, it’s very modern from the glass and chrome bar to the Apple mac for guests to use at reception. The bedroom was compact and space mainly taken up by the large bed but that was fine. The view was of the side car park so not that impressive, but the window was large and let in plenty of light. However for fresh air you had to open it from the bottom which was a bit of a worry being on the ground level, in case something crawled in during the night! The room had tea and coffee making facilities, a slim line TV, table, desk and wardrobe plus two bedside tables. The bathroom was again on the small side but cleverly fitted with triple mirrors which afforded good all round views when getting ready to go out and the illusion of extra space. The bath was small but the shower was decent. The rooms were very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was a little overcooked for my taste, but there was a good choice and the dining room was very pleasant.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a veiw of the front or garden.
