We've visited South Florida for about 30 years, yet we still feel very fortunate as travellers who have been gifted with time to stay, to look and to explore. This trip, we consciously went out of our way to seek out special moments, special places, and especially all the various beaches in the area that we've visited in the past. We've visited most of the different beaches in the past, in the Venice-Sarasota area, finding that Nokomis seems to be the best centrally located spot to stay, never being more than 20-30 minutes from any of the most beautiful, yet very varied types of beaches of the Florida coast.
Venice Beach combines the best of both worlds ~ Shopping & Tanning! Such a short distance from downtown Venice, with its amazing upscale boutique shopping venues, is the Venice Municipal Beach. Even though it's not the best location to hunt for shark's teeth, Venice Beach, due to its convenience for all the tourists in the posh condos and high-rises along this beach, is the most popular shark tooth hunting spot ~ so much so that the town uses the image of a fossilized shark tooth to form the "V" in Venice!
This is a beach that's busy with lots of beach-chairs, dozens of multicoloured umbrellas, along with coolers and backpacks galore. There are lifeguards, restrooms, picnic tables, a concession stand, a pavilion and volleyball courts. This is a happening place and if you are into Scuba diving, you are only a quarter mile from a reef offshore.
There aren't too many glimpses into the Florida of the past here, more an ever changing charming beach scene in transition ~ a mix of a hip, modern and funky Florida of today along with the exhilarating excitement for tomorrow!
