quiet, scenic, safe. starting at shamrock park in s. venice you can walk/bike along the intercoastal and exit in downtown venice or continue along the trail and go to sarasota (a long walk, but a relatively easy bike trip). lots of birds (inc. scrub jays) and tortoises greet you along the way. there are benches along the route for resting or just watching the people on the other side of the intercoastal. water not available along route so bring some with you. restroom at park parking is available at shamrock.

This park includes bike paths on both sides of the waterway. This is very safe for biking. There is lots of animal life like birds and turtles.

Waterway Park extends from Caspersen's Beach to Venice Avenue. Ride your bike from the center of the town.

You can bike from Sarasota to Venice. The Venice part of the trail is the most interesting and pretty. It has good access to the beaches and downtown Venice. It goes along the intercoastal waterway. It is safe and a lot of fun. Downtown Venice is nice with good restaurants. The Venice and Caspersen beaches are very easy to get to.

Kudos to the City of Venice for building this multi-use, paved trail along either side of the Intracoastal Waterway south from Venice Avenue. The trail takes advantage of views of the waterway that was carved from Hackney Creek to continue the Intracoastal Waterway south from Venice Inlet and Dona Bay to Lemon Bay and Englewood. It looks like a ditch, but it's still scenic. There is safe parking and easy access to the trail at the Old Train Depot at the Venice Avenue Bridge, and at the Shamrock Park and Caspersen Beach trailheads.I bicycled both sides of the trail and found the Circus Avenue Bridge the easiest way to cross from one side to the other. This is an urban, linear trail. Each side is about 5 to 6 miles long, so it's an out and back type of ride unless you jump off the trail to explore some of the quiet and shady streets of old Venice. Sections of the trail could use a repaving. There is little shade, so dress accordingly and lather on the sunscreen. Water and restrooms are available at the trailheads. The trail was hot when I rode it, but it was fun to ride along the water and then out to the beach. Best of all, from the Old Train Depot the Waterway Trail connects to the newly-completed Legacy Trail which runs 11 miles north to Sarasota. One can enjoy several hours of bike riding and never have to get out on a busy street. Heaven! But you still need to wear a helmet. I was amazed at the number of riders without helmets on the trail. The City of Venice should make this a requirement and post a "helmet rule" on its trail signage.
