Sharkey's has been named the #1 beach bar in Venice; to be fair, it's the only beach bar we found. It's currently under renovation but the old bar area and restaurant seem to be intact.
Sharkey's is for seafood lovers. That may seem obvious, but anyone with an allergy or aversion to the smells or tastes of the ocean may have a hard time getting past that. The menu is heavy on seafood, but unique and creative in the way it creates both fish and land-based items. This isn't your ordinary, fried shrimp and hamburger joint, though you can certainly get those.
The one qualm I had with Sharkey's was the placement of trash cans around the outside bar area, where seating is also available for that spectacular view. It's a seafood place at the base of a pier in a state where flies only have to hear rumor of a free meal to show up in droves. The last thing you want are trash cans within 10 feet of some tables.
However, there's also a pleasant indoor area as well. After perusing your place mat which identifies sharks and their teeth, you can order from a fairly extensive menu. We tried the black bean cakes and enjoyed them. My friend really enjoyed the Coconut Shrimp, rolled in a house batter and served with an unbelievable mango colada dipping sauce. I had the mango BBQ pulled pork sandwich on a soft and fresh foccacia roll. The sandwich was full of pineapple chunks, red bell pepper and plenty of tangy pork. It would easily make two meals.
Our server was friendly and even went so far as to beg the kitchen for a cup of watermelon gazpacho, not usually sold as a side. The negotiations were more than worthwhile. It's a refreshingly chilled explosion of complimentary flavors in the mouth.
We enjoyed Sharkey's On The Pier very much. Come for the view alone, but if you're looking for a good meal and live music, all the better.
