Umatilla? BBQ should be the first thing you think of when you hear of a town with a name life that. We went into town for a Dog Hunters BBQ (don't laugh) and their didn't look very good. Umatilla reputably had several good BBQ joints. We hadn't tried The "DAM" Smoker so we decided to go. SO GLAD! The place is just what a Q joint should be - walk up window, pisgs with bandanas and roosters, welcome bikers sign, barn for karaoke out back, paper towels on the table and squeeze bottles of sauce in beer holders. Order and seat yourself (the city guy had some trouble with that, he waited to be seated than waited for a waitress before he noticed people walking to tables with their food) The ribs are amazing. Not much of a dry rub and naked. But tender and flavor-able, not greasy. Fall off the bone. The sweet and hot sauces were enjoyable, on the NC thin side. A smokey taste, but not that big red ring so many prize. I plan on taking the long way home to order a $20 slab to go. The sides were okay. No fries. One of the owners stopped by and greeted all the tables. Most he knew by name. It is a one lane drive, so you might have to be neighborly and let the person trying to leave go first. If you are out Umatilla way, stop by the "DAM" Smoker for some ribs!
