“Great value and staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2009

This was our first trip to Florida for spring break. We stayed here because it was highly recommended by friends who stay there every year. It was a great Hotel and the staff is just wonderful. Have not one complaint for this place at all. Can't wait until next year to go back and stay again. I think we will have more people staying there also.

Everyone took very good care of us and anything that we needed. Nice laundry facility and great rooms. We will be back.

We arrived on a Friday and checked out Monday morning. We weren't impressed from the outside as we arrived (it looks like a run of the mill cheap motel), but were pleasantly surprised once we checked in. We arrived before check-in time so our room wasn't ready, but they worked to get it ready as soon as possible. In the meantime, we walked across the street to the beach and spent a couple hours enjoying the warm temperatures and soft sand. Great beach!!!

Throughout our stay, the staff was extremely friendly and very accommodating. I don't think we wever walked from the front entrance to our room without at least one staff member greeting us and asking if we needed anything.

The rooms were comfortale and clean, with the softest bath towels I've ever found in a motel. We had a good view of the gulf and pool.

Even though it was spring break and there were a fari amount of college age people, we never encountered any rowdiness. We watched and really enjoyed the night volleyball games. Again, the crowd was lively, but not anything close to annoying.

We found several good restaurants within walking distance - Sloppy Joes ($$) and The Middle Ground ($$$) to name a couple. Even the Waffle House next door made us a couple delicious BLT sandwiches to go that we enjoed on the beach. Never thought I'd be recommending a Waffle House to anyone!

The only disappointment for the entire time were the sunsets. We anticipated getting some good photos, but about 15 minutes before the sun met the horizon, it went behind a low layer of clouds (or light smog?), obliterating the susnset.

I highly recommend this motel. It's much cheaper than the high rises across the street, but offers great access to the beach.

Nice hotel, underwent recent renovations, rooms well furnished. However, there seemed to be problems between management and employees. Handwritten notes were in the hallway stairs of the 2nd and 3rd floors indicating how unfair management was in wages, hours, etc. Rooms didn't get cleaned until 5:00 or 6:00 in the afternoon which was extremely inconvenient. Light bulb in the bathroom was burned out and I was told by a young man at the front desk that the maintence man left at 3:00 and they don't keep a supply of light bulbs in stock, that he would order one for the next morning, which never happened. Went downstairs the next day and told the same man, take one from another room, I just want light in the bathroom.. The next day another bulb burned out, saw the maintence man and told him myself. Toilets don't work well either, some new efficiency thing. Go elsewhere for continental breakfast, weak coffee, packaged danishes. Either upgrade or eliminate. All in all, it is a nice hotel that still has some tweaks to work out.

Booked this trip sorta last minute as I desperately needed a break. We picked Treasure Island as were a family travelling during March Break & didn't want the chaos of students partying 24-7, so we chose Treasure Island (that & it was warm & gulfside!).

We booked through Expedia - which in itself was nightmareish - and got our flights, hotel & car (through Budget - ANOTHER nightmare!) in a package deal. The price wasn't great - but travelling during March Break, we were well aware of what we were getting into!

We stayed Tuesday, March 17 - Sunday, March 22, 2009.... two adults & 2 kids under 4. I'll break my review into four sections - HOTEL, BEACH, ATTTRACTIONS, RESTAURANT.

HOTEL:
Treasure Bay Hotel & Marina is a gem of a find. Directly across the street from the beach, recently refurbished, we rec'd a room with 2 queen beds & a fridge/sink/microwave.
The room was clean, pleasantly decorated & we had a nice plasma TV on the wall. It was cleaned regularly, we always had plenty of hot water & towels. We had requested a crib but when we arrived there were none left... they sent up a cot which fit perfectly between our 2 beds, and then proceeded to call other hotels & rental places to get us a crib.... THAT'S GREAT SERVICE! As it would happen - my daughter LOVED the cot wedged in so we told them not to worry about it!
The front desk staff were OUTSTANDING. Anytime we had a request (ie. dinner recommendations? attractions?) they were only to happy to assist, from giving suggestions to helping make reservations, and printing our flight boarding passes. When my daughter got ill & threw up all over the bedding, someone was there in seconds to clean it up.... no fun task! They went out of their way several times a day to ask how things were & if we needed anything. They truly get what customer service is!
There was a hotel happy hour from 5-630pm on Friday & Saturday - a nice touch & great way to mingle & get to know fellow guests. Free beer & wine, plus a selection of snacks.
There was a breakfast in the morning - really just muffins & cereal bars - but my kids loved it! There was coffee, but no juice - slight disappointment but we just bought a jug & kept it in the mini-fridge!
Hotel pool & hot tub were great - though it was booked to capacity - it never felt overcrowded or crazy. Lots of famillies & older couples, fairly quiet & low key, but no one got annoyed by my kids having fun in the pool.
There ended up being a few "yahoos" that booked in for March Break (known because they kept yelling "Spring Break '09 y'all!" They were really disrespectful - spitting, swearing, throwing garbage & cigarette butts everywhere. The hotel staff was right on them, and within 2 days they disappeared (kicked out???). Pool could've been a touch warmer - but was far from cold!

BEACH:
The beach was right acvross the street, not far away at all. There was a paid parking lot in front of it. The beach itself is not far away - but the hike to the water was!!! But really - who cares??? There was a nice little playground for the kids, lots of small shells, clean white sand. A little bit of litter (I'm stunned how lazy people can be!) but in general, a very well-cared for beach! Our first night we took a stroll down at around 5pm & saw dolphins just offshore! Amazing!

ATTRACTIONS:

The Pirate Ship at John's Pass - We thought this would be a fun one for the kids. My son, 3.5 yrs old, LOVED it!!! My daughter, 1.5 yrs old, was unimpressed. It was fun. It cost:$23 for kids, $33 for adults, $8 for kids under 2. Free pop, beer & wine. They had a watergun fight, face-painting, a treasure hunt, story-telling and shot a mini-cannon. They also had a little conga and limbo thing for the kids. We enjoyed it!

Dolphin watching and Shelling cruise at Egmont Key - We went on a cruise to watch dolphins and shelling, only had to pay for 2 adults, above $70. Saw several dolphins on the way out and back. The Egmont Key was pretty nice - there was lots to see, you could snorkel for about 20 minutes, then you went to shore to collect shells, there was a lighthouse, an old Indian burial ground, and other historical buildings. We didn't get off the shore as the kids were having fun there. We enjoyed it!

Clearwater Aquarium - It was almost an hour from Treasure Island & opretty small, but a neat place to visit as they rehabilitate & release (if possible) injured marine life such as dolphins & sea turtles. Cost $11 for adults, $7.50 for kids over 3. They did a little show with the dolphins, you could pet stingrays... overall we were in & out under 2 hours.

RESTAURANTS:

Sculley's at John's Pass - First night there, we went to John's Pass & wanted seafood... we were directed to John's Pass & selected Sculley's because they had a nice harbour view from the dock. Well, we couldn't sit out there with kids due to "fire regulations"... I took that to mean smokers??? So inside we went. What can I say.... overpriced, lukewarm, mediocre, & miniscule portions. We chose a selection of appetizers at $8.95 each... HORRIBLE! (Crab cakes - ONE cake, small, Fried cheese - undercooked & cold, Coconut shrimp - no coconut on inside - coconut paste on inside - yucky!, stuffed mushrooms - good but very few & tiny) Our kids order a hot dog & fries to split... and had more food than us. Bypass this place!

Caddy's in Treasure Island - on the beach, live band, great ambience... and PACKED! Took forever to get food. My son fell asleep & my husband had to take my daughter for several walks on the beach while we waited for food. We had fried shrimp (good), chili fries (tasty but nice heartburn later), and jerk chicken - which was NOT spicy at all. Decent food - just way too long to get it, but a fun place maybe to visit w/o kids?

Sloppy Pelican in St. Pete - another recommendation & great food! Husband had grouper cheels on onion straws & loved it, I had a fishermans platter & it was very good. Overall, good food & service & very little wait.

Gigi's Italian Restaurant - we had planned on lots of seafood while in Florida but had not been impressed. We kept hearing people mention Gigi's over & over and we finally caved in & went. WOW. Huge portions, hot, delicious... it was amazing! Husband had meat ravioli, I had chicken parm & kids had spaghetti & meatballs. Meatballs were so good we ordered a side order! Highly recommended!

Senor Loco's in Clearwater - found on way home from aquarium. A little pricey but very good Mexican food.

Original's Pizza in Treasure Island - our last night in TI, we wanted to lay low & ordered in. Following another recommendation from the hotel staff, we ordered from Original's (free delivery) & got strombolis ($5.99). They were MASSIVE & hot & delicious. We also got bread sticks & chicken wings. Excellent oprices, great food!

I'm surprised to read the previous review. We really had no problems. Maybe some people are nit-pickers! We arrived early, and checked in. They were able to get us into a room right away. Granted, there was no hair dryer or remote control, but that was quickly taken care of. In fact , I think the previous hair dryer was stolen by the previous occupants, because when we got back to our room there was a brand new hair dryer, still in the box, waiting for us.
If you're going to complain about the pool, maybe you should have looked at the pictures before hand. We knew before we went that the pool was adjacent to the parking lot. Not a big deal to us. It was clean and a great temperature. Our kids loved it. We never saw any underage drinkers, and I hate smoke but was never bothered at all.
We felt that the room was very clean, and well taken care of. My only complaint would be that the sheets were "pilling", but otherwise we were comfortable. My son was sick with a fever the first day, but we were able to walk to a Walgreens just down the street to get him some Motrin. We felt the hotel was close to alot of things.
I guess your vacation is what you make of it, and if you're going to complain about every little detail, then you're probably not going to have a very good time. We had a great time!!

Hmmmm... that is the exact wording on their website... should have known what i was getting myself into. After 6 email attempts to send the confirmation, they realized they had an "email problem." Upon arriving to the "newly converted Days Inn" we almost drove into the pool when we parked. Fortunately, we would have stopped by all the underaged drinkers and smokers (yes, it is a non-smoking facility) within the gates of the pool. The "resort jacuzzi" was accented with a beautiful piece of paper with "Out of Service" on it along with the blue tape on the railing. We were, though, able to check in at 5:30 (after waiting several hours) to find a room with stains on the bedspread, fingerprints on the dark wood, hair in the bathroom, and scum on the countertops. A spider and its web waved as we exited the room five minutes later to have our visit cancelled. Thankfully, this was the least of their worries and there were no hassles. That was the nicest part of our stay. Oh, I almost forgot that there is no "amenity fee" here... I figured out why. The "business center" is a three foot cubicle with a label on the pc that states "BUSINESS CENTER." Wow - kick back and take off your shows....

My husband and I recently spent Sunday to Friday morning enjoying this hotel and the surrounding area. Extremely clean and modern with the most comfortable king bed we have ever slept in. If you are staying more than a day or two, it's a good idea to bring basic cutlery and plates, bowls etc. as there is NOTHING in the cupboards - a rather strange setup as they have a fridge, microwave and small sink but nothing to eat from. We bought plastic cutlery and plates at the local Publix store for breakfast and lunch in our room. The packaged muffins, danishes and granola bars do not really make a breakfast but served more as snacks for on the road. The Publix grocery store is a 10 minute walk from the hotel and is beautiful with a wonderful selection - we bought hot meals from the deli for dinner a couple of nights as well as o.j., fruit etc. The location is great for walking the beach - be sure and make the 25 minute walk south to Caddy's on the Beach for breakfast. Also the Italian restaurant Gigi's was very good and only a 5 minute walk away. It's a 20 minute walk to John's Pass at Madeira Beach and a good way to spend a morning or afternoon. The pool and hot tub are clean and relaxing and not at all busy when we were there. All in all, a very enjoyable holiday.
