“Nice Place!”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

For our last minute plans for the 4th of July week this place was nice very clean, and we could bring our dog. It needs a few update but It was very clean and we stayed for a week everything very close to walking distance. Johns Pass is right across the bridge with in 10 minute walking u have all the food, attraction places there. The owner is very good in communicating with you!

We stayed in unit 7 at pieces of eight for 2 weeks in March. The owner Steven and tenants are friendly people who usually come for months at a time and greet you by name and hang out together for drinks before dinner while cooking on the grill.
The unit we had was upstairs from the picnic area which has a very nice deck with a large glass table and seating area , the new barbecue and is gated for your pets. ( website photos need updating)
Our unit was facing the back away from the main road and was relatively quiet. (just heard the trash pick up early in the morning)
It is within 3 blocks to John's Pass and across the road to the beach.
( 5 minute walk)
The unit has a very small/old kitchen if you plan to cook which was adequate but had hardly any pantry space. The bedroom was roomy enough with a queen size bed, dresser, night tables , ceiling fan and ac. a small closet with linens, towels and other household appliances.
The bathroom needs updating as the tub was peeling and the water strength was weak while showering .
The living room is carpeted while the other units have tile. a comfy and clean sofa bed and additional chair, tv, ac, ceiling fan, and set of tables. The dining area round table and 4 comfy chairs looked over the courtyard which has plants and a small water fountain.
I felt very safe here and went out a few times at night to the K market 2 blocks down to get change for the laundry room $1.50 for washer and dryer.
There are many cottages in this area but none other allowed pets and had such friendly owners and tenants.
There isn't a dishwasher and I felt I needed to wash all dishes and utensils that I personally used ( cups had coffee stains) I needed more kitchen towels, bath mat and even though he met with us at our arrival and asked us if everything was ok a day later, I was more concerned with a sick pet that needed surgery.
There were some areas in need for improvement : the ceiling fans and lamps needed some dusting/cleaning and the front of the refrigerator door seemed stained. One of the living room tables glass insert kept falling off) and a new tub needed.( repair cracked floor tile) The living room AC should not be plugged into an extension cord.
I would advise Steve to update this unit as he has been doing to some of the others really soon. I left a note in the apt before we left as to these areas of needed improvement and have yet to hear from him. ( maybe the cleaning lady didn't give it to him as he was away on a cruise when we left)

Room Tip: Unit 5 has a bigger kitchen and is more spacious.

OK, we actually stayed at Pieces of Eight in 2005, not 2010, but I'm not sure why we shouldn't be allowed to enter a review. Basically, I saw the one highly negative review and it offended me! We had a great time at Pieces of Eight and recommend it to anyone.

It's not the Taj Mahal! But it's so cute and has lots of nice touches that make it an outstanding value. The courtyard is beautifully done, an outstanding little oasis. The location is great, a short walk to John's Pass and an even shorter walk to the beach. Our room was very clean and well maintained. We slept our four kids in the 1BR, and my wife and I slept on the sleeper sofa.

Our only complaint is that, being a rural family, the road noise from Gulf Blvd. was at times a distraction. But it was clear from Google Maps satellite images when we booked what we were getting ourselves into. Our family was on a tight budget that year or we would come back. I think it would be outstanding for an extended stay.

The first year we went to Florida for the winter (we've returned 2 years since), we booked Pieces of Eight from the computer. I was leery about spending 3 months in an unknown place. When we arrived all fears were gone. We were greeted by our very friendly and helpful owner. The apartment, though small, was clean and pleasant. The linens were clean, and the kitchen was well furnished. If we needed anything, one call to the owner got it for us. It didn't matter that the structure was out of the 40's. We were allowed our dog and.... we were out of the snow. There is a wonderful beach with breath taking sunsets across the street. We're looking forward to this, our fourth winter at Pieces of Eight.

Intended to get around to this much sooner, but here goes...
At first glance, like a battered treasure chest, Pieces of Eight isn't much to look at. A cluster of aging 1940's era cottages arranged around a central courtyard. Then you notice the little touches; the palm-filled central oasis, the pond, the sound of a tiny waterfall, birds singing in the trees.
And the rooms; tidy apartments outfitted with full kitchens, cozy living spaces and quiet, comfortable beds. All this and less than one block to a clean, beautiful beach.
Our month-long stay was relaxing and restorative and the delightful family that runs the place were warm and attentive yet unobtrusive. Although we loved cooking in our unit or at the nearby communal barbecue, they recommended many local attractions and dining establishments that surprised us in their variety. Our one problem with a flickering lamp was seen to quickly and effectively. And the cleaning staff were great at removing the tons of beach sand we somehow kept bringing back.
Although we usually head south for the winter, we've already booked for the summer. We're thoroughly enchanted by this place; a piece of disappearing Florida that's rapidly getting eaten up by cookie-cutter mega resorts.

My family and I stayed for 1 week through the 4th of July. We had a wonderful time and were very surprised at the previous review when we researched it, which is what has motivated me to write a review. We were pleasantly surprised with the roominess of the apartments. Most hotels in this area are more expensive and don't have a kitchen. The environment was kid friendly. There is a nice BBQ area we used practically every night we were there which allowed us to be more conservative on our trip. We had no problems taking showers and our rooms were extremely clean. I would definitely return with my family. It was also a short 10 minute walk to shopping at John's Pass and across the street from the beach which was very convenient... we came and went to the beach several times per day, and the sunsets were magnificent. Again, I would recommend this hotel for the value and the location.

I wrote a review a few years ago on Pet Friendly Pieces of Eight and thought I would update it a bit. We spent 4 months there Dec-March of this last year. We always stay in the same unit (no 5) and this will be our fifth year as we booked again for this coming winter.. Not a lot has changed as far as the set up...2 two unit buidlings and one four unit building, a courtyard in front with lots of greenry and foliage, with a small fish pond. A patio with a gas grill, gazebo and a abundance of chairs.

basic info: it is located across the street from the ocean...has a canal behind it...three or four blocks to Johns Pass which is filled with restaurants and shops...and within walking distance to other eating places and the downtown area of Treasure Island.

The owner has recently fenced in the patio area so residents can sit with their dogs and allow the dogs to roam free...and I have to admit I LOVE this feature...most of the three and four month winter residents have pets so this makes it especially nice.A ll the pets get along and are well behaved and of course very spoiled!

Also this past year, gates were added to the porch area of four of the units...again so you can let your dog go out and sit on the porch with no fear of getting loose and onto busy Gulf Blvd.

Since my last review...some of the units have had new floors put in....a tile floor in unit 1 and a wood laminate in Unit 2. When we arrived this year, all the porches were freshly painted which was a nice treat as they had been scuffed and scratched from wear and tear and paint missing and I have to say it did look nice.

Our unit on the inside was pretty much the same, but the carpet had been taken up to the tile floor underneath...and though a couple tiles were cracked I much preferred that to the dark color carpeting..much easier to keep clean and the white floor makes the rooms seem bigger...Steve the owner came by on our first day to bring a brand new and very pretty area rug..but I told him I preferred the tile floor...so he took the carpet back home with him.

Our unit was furnished with everything we could need...lots of dishes, pots and pans, crock pot, toaster oven..towels and sheets were all provided. A large selection on satellite tv which was wonderful to be able to select what you want to see and secure High speed internet and house phones in each room. Pretty much the same as all the years before.

Of course there are always down sides to everything..downside is that they are older buildings, built back in the forties or fifties...and do not have a lot of the shine and sparkle of newer places...and they are apartments, not a motel so you have to do your own bedding and towels..but there is a laundry room on site so it makes it pretty easy to get your laundry done.

Being a place that is pet friendly the "clean up" rule is pretty strictly enforced by the residents. One couple that stayed for a month, their dogs wold bark when they were left alone, but it was during the day time, and they did work at it to figure out how to keep their dogs quiet (by leaving out the back door instead of the front).

Probably the biggest gripe this past winter was not about Pieces of Eight but about noisy neighbors living behind Pieces of Eight..but the owner, Steve was able to get that remedied and peace was restored to the area.

We have made many new friends by going back every year and even know a lot of the local residents in the streets around Pieces of Eight. We had a lovely time this winter..so much to do..so many places to vist...that we are already making plans for this coming year.

Most of the long term residents return each year, though there are still openings during the tourist time...but if you stay there for long term in the winter months, you get to know each other, almost like a big extended family...if you wan to go somehwere all day..another resident will take your dog for a walk and watch over your dog while our gone...and that is a BIGGIE for any pet owner.
