Great park/beach that is still relatively undiscovered. We go to Egmont Key across from Fort De Soto and it's an amazing day trip.

Great place to go camping. A lot of the campsites are on the water. The county has left a lot of the trees so there is privacy between campsites. Be mindful of raccoons, they open coolers that are not secured. Very crafty!

If you visit Fort DE Soto for the historical fort, you will be very disappointed at this moment. The fort is a small mount, not a stone fort like you see in San Juan. There are some empty rooms on the ground level with few photos. In addition, the fort is under construction. All stairways are blocked so you even cannot walk to the top of the fort for a view. However, the park is large with quit beaches without any modem buildings. You can enjoy the nature, walking, kayaking, fishing or just relax.

Nice for the kids to see a beach without hotels and traffic jams and parking problems. Great back to nayture feel. Raccoons at the beach were cool even if my daughter was scared of them. The fort isn't so interesting to the kids but I liked it.

Our prime reason for going to the park was to see the fort. Although moderately interesting, there is a limited amount to see and do. Some parts were closed for renovation. There is an interesting small museum just adjacent which is worth stopping at. The drive out to the park and in the park is great. I think you would get more value from the visit by planning a picnic and taking time to walk the beaches.
