My fiance and I love hiking here. We bring the dogs and pack a lunch. It's gorgeous. Best park in Tampa Bay!

Gorgeous, clean, beautiful scenery, great picnic areas and bike trails. There is even a section of rapids. You can fish and camp there.

Love the waterways of Tampa Bay area. Be prepared because this is nature: wear good shoes, hat, bug and sunscreen.

My husband and I hadn't camped for 25 years, so we decided to experiment by spending one night at Hillsborough River State Park, to see if we'd like to pursue a less expensive and more natural way of seeing our lovely state. Our reservation was easily made online for campsite #7, and we gathered our supplies: a small tent, air mattress, sleeping bag, food, etc. and our two kayaks. When we arrived we were very impressed with the beauty of the location: tall pine trees, scrub palmettos, palm trees, and blue skies with mild temperatures. The campgrounds were neat and well-maintained.
Our site was perfect for our needs, with a picnic table, fire ring, water, and electric hook up, plus some green grass at the back of our site to pitch our tent. Two bath/shower facilities were conveniently close to our site. They were clean and had plenty of soap, toilet paper, and several shower stalls. (I would give the park 5 stars, if the state could spend some money updating the bathroom facilities to give the park an even better look!)
We did not use the pool, which was closed due to the weather; however, we stopped in the restaurant/camp store that adjoins it, and it certainly looked well-maintained and huge! The young lady who worked at the restaurant was very helpful and friendly, and although we don't mind paying higher prices when vacationing, the food prices could be a bit lower. More people would be willing to treat themselves to a meal there, if they did. The restaurant itself is quite nice---spacious with wooden tables and chairs and a pretty view of the pool area through large glass windows.
We kayaked down the Hillsborough River, also, with a convenient launch-site within our camping loop. We thoroughly enjoyed the slow-moving, peaceful atmosphere on the river with various wildlife sightings: birds, alligators, turtles and a snake!
In modern times, modest tents have been replaced with semi-truck trailer-sized rv's, and there are plenty of them at the park. However, we all peacefully co-existed whatever our mode of camping. Loop 2 had adult walkers, bike riders, and kids biking around the loop. By 10 p.m. everyone had settled down, and so did we, listening to the squirrels rustling around outside our tent, and eventually falling asleep to the sound of a hooting bird.
