Historic Tavernier Inn Hotel
Ranked #1 of 1 Tavernier B&B and Inns
Reviewed May 29, 2012

We booked this hotel at the last minute do to an appointment. It was Memorial Day weekend, and we had no choice if we wanted to book at $ 125.00 or less. The ground area has absolutely no maintenance, live copper electric wire laying on concrete exposed to the elements and customers. In the room there is not any counter space, no water pressure, no hot water at all, the toilet is in front of the wall mirror, so you have to tilt over to your right to shave or put make up on or comb or brush your hair, and the toilet tank takes 15 mins to refill, so if more than one person has to use it you better not flush or hold it. The entire air conditioner unit is in the room with you, where the closet use to be(yes no closet, no hangers) it worked great but was way to noisy. The check in office was disgusting. Dog bones with meat still on them all over the floor. I don't think it was ever vacuumed , there are files and empty boxes, food not eaten all over the place. You would think they would want to show respect and responsibility to who ever owns it and the customers. We love the keys and we respect the historical history that the Keys represent, if this hotel is saying it is a historical building it is a slap in the face to the Keys, and we cant find any historical history of this hotel.

Room Tip: Never saw a pool or a fitness center. Saw enough, would want to see that. It is better than sleeping...

Staff ok (but reception closes too early), cleanliness of carpet not always perfect, small rooms, but friendly hostel feel, and reasonable pricing.

Loved the tables outside, and the French café next door.

Though one does expect some concessions in an historic property, this Inn lacked the charm & ambience that could have been preserved. If you check in late or check out early, do not expect to see any representative of the hotel. You will pick up and drop off your keys.

Upon arrival, the unkempt grounds foreshadow what you will find inside. The outdoor stairs to our 2nd floor room needed a sweeping almost as much as the carpet that lined the 2nd floor hallway needed a good vacuuming. We were greeted by the scent of stale cigarette smoke when we entered.

The room was in better condition, although although dusting might benefit allergy sufferers. The linens & towels were clean, as were the bath facilities. The room is small, but adequate for two people on a short stay.
The bed was comfortable, and the air conditioner was not overly noisy, as in some motels.

Don't believe the sign in the lobby that says Cafe Moka next door opens @ 6:30am. We were told they haven't opened that early for over a year.

This hotel is OK for a place to rest your head and get a shower. I don't think it's worthy of the
$79.00 or higher rate.

This hotel was just plain odd. From the check-in next door with the woman and her dog that chews EVERYTHING to the weird setup of the room and bathroom (no outlets at all in the bathroom that we could find), my husband and I found this hotel to be strange, although fairly clean; just old and run down. Our expectations were pretty low, as the price was the lowest we could find for the area, and we were only staying one night, so I can't say that it was awful, but after visiting some other properties in Key Largo, I think next time we would spend a little more and skip this place.

stayed for 2 nights and easily passed the hotel while looking for a white building. The hotels website still shows very old photos (ex, building is now caribbean pink and not white). The hotel itself has received significant renovation. Our room was on the second floor. The room didnt feel or smell like grandma's house at all. It has fresh paint, clean and comfy bed, wifi works excellent, hot showers. the best part is that this is one of the most affordable and excellent value within the Florida keys! as well as a renovated 1920s house. The coffee shop adjacent was excellent ( no need to drive somewhere).

Room Tip: excellent for exploring upper keys (largo to islamorada) but too far from key west.

WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL TO ANYONE! EVEN MY WORST ENEMY! This is the worst accommodation that I have ever stayed in. We realize that it is an old restored hotel, but their definition of retored is far diffrerent than mine. Pictures on website very mis-leading. The rooms were not that nice. The first room we were given was very chopped up, no outlets in bathroom, very little lighting. We changed rooms but not much better. The window shades did not even begin to cover the windows. Cleanliness was debatable. Full payment was required in advance and no refunds. Now I know why. Quests would take one look at rooms and demand a refund (which we did and were denied). The bad thing about this was we were travelling with friends and we had made the reservations. What an embarassment!

Room Tip: Stay some place else!!!!!!

We were disappointed that Room 207 was carpeted and had a sour smell. Other than that, we liked the place. Comfortable bed, soft towels, the A/C and TV worked, lobby had a computer and printer for guests to use, and there was a guest fridge with ice. Moka Cafe next door was perfect for grabbing an early cup of coffee, and you can sit at outdoor tables. The hotel has a no-frills, trusting vibe since the lobby isn't staffed (you go next door) and nobody makes up your room if you're there for several nights. The location was a fine base for a day trip into the Everglades, snorkeling in John Pennecamp State Park, and trying various restaurants in between.

Room Tip: Room 207 smelled sour.
