“Nice Stop for Bird Lovers”
Reviewed June 29, 2013

My companion and I enjoyed the Wild Bird Center. Don't go expecting it to be an extensive zoo. This is a donation-funded rescue that hosts a collection of injured birds that are either in the process of being rehabilitated, or are in sanctuary care because they cannot be returned to the wild. There is no fee for admission, but donations are gladly accepted to help injured birds. The center offers an outdoor, self-guided tour with facts about both individual residents and their species mounted on the enclosures, as well as information about what is required to care for them and what your donation could fund. There are trails off to both the left and the right of the parking area. The shorter one to the left focuses on songbirds and local flora while the longer trail to the right, a boardwalk through the mangroves, houses raptors and seabirds and leads to the shore. The boardwalk extends out past the bird enclosures to a short trail flanked by the shore on one side and a salt pond on the other, where you may be able to observe more wild birds. Bring bug spray!

“Great place with a wonderful mission”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

This is a great quick stop on the way to/from the Keys. We enjoyed our walk visiting with the birds. We bonded with a cute blue jay named Flip with tried to hand us small pieces of mulch through the netting. The birds were well cared for and we were happy to visit and make a donation.

“Herons, and Egrets, and Hawks, oh my!”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

Birds, birds everywhere! Some in cages, some just hanging out on the walkways, in the mangroves, on the beach... So cool. Definitely, get a can of Off! before you venture in; the mosquitos aren't as bad as Everglades National Park, but they will definitely find you. Really cool to see the hawks, owls, and other birds in re-hab that you don't always get such a close look at in the wild.

“A must stop!!”
Reviewed June 26, 2013

I can't believe I have never thought to come here and give a review of this wonderful place!! I've been there many times over the years. My husband and I live in South Florida so we like to "getaway" to Islamorada and the Florida Keys whenever we can. And, we always stop on the way a the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center. Also, when we have "new" Keys people, family and friends, coming with us - we always stop and show them also! How could we just drive on by without stopping to say hello to Pickles and Fredricka?? They are the beautiful, amusing and entertaining "welcome" crew of beautiful birds out front. We love that we can help even in a little way by giving our small donation on our way to the lovely walking boardwalk that winds around leading you from one beautiful bird to the next. We love the owls the most! The hawks, falcons, and birds of prey are an awesome site. The pelicans and other water birds are magnificent. We even saw cats there one visit having some fish, and that was a treat to us! lol Friendly people running this wonderful facility where you can learn alot and take a moment to be humbled by nature and the humans behind this place who truly save the lives of our local birds and wildlife every day!! Always....a must-stop in the Keys!!
