Our party of three were lucky enough to rent a house within walking distance of the Old Tavernier Restaurant in June 2007. We were out fishing all day and ended up eating there on about 12 nights of our stay. That may seem extravagant but the food was so good we kept coming back. We visit this area for the fishing fairly regularly and are well aquainted with many other eateries around Tavernier and Islamorada. The Old Tavernier was by far and away the best.
The Staff were incredibly welcoming and we were even offered VIP passes to a big local party. The restaurant was split into three. The bar restaurant with sport on TV, a much bigger restaurant room through double doors and a few outside tables overlooking a nice canal basin. Everywhere was spotless.
We gradually ate our way through the menu during our stay but certain dishes kept getting reselected. The cheese starters were fantastic particularly the baked brie and the three cheese filo. The beef tips were another highight. Main courses were also great with succulent steaks and delicious fresh fish dishes. Even though we ate there so regularly the daily specials ensured that we had a continuous choice. The chef would cook your fish however you wanted and it was nice to get away from rich cheese sauses occasionally. The wine list was good and we found the prices very reasonable. I suppose we averaged around $100 per meal for three of us with wine. Compared to what we pay for mediocre pub grub in the UK - we thought this great value. We were there in low season June and it was busy at weekends. During high season I guess that you will need to book.
