“Great party boat fishing”

Dolphin Deep Sea Fishing
Reviewed December 24, 2012

Went fishing with my wife on a Thursday-there were maybe 35 or so aboard. The fare of $65 includes fishing rod(bring your own if you have one the equipment is typical boat rods & reels-adequate but not the best) & they supply squid for bait. Fresh dead shrimp was offered at the dock for $5-or bring your own-necessary if you want to catch hogfish(very tasty).
The boat left the dock a little after 8am & returned around 4pm. The captain went nothwest to fish some natural bottom spots. We fished at least 3 different areas with some minor wiggles at each spot to put us on more fish. I was pleased with the moving when we didn't catch at the spot-some boats anchor up and don't move too much(more of a boat ride than fishing trip).
We caught a few throw back groupers-my wife got a 20" keeper, grunts, porgies, triggerfish(also throw backs even though very tasty due to federal closure), blowfish. Didn't catch the desired hogfish although others on the boat did get them. The boat also offered live pinfish if you want to fish exclusively for keeper grouper-no fee for the live bait.
On the way back to the dock the mates fileted our fish for a few dollars-very reasonable & saved me the job of cutting lots of small fish.
The grunts were very tasty-I cooked some for us, my mom & brother that nite-there is nothing better than fresh fish you catch yourself.
The trip was a great value, the crew was very helpful(don't forget to leave them a tip), captain worked hard to get us on fish. I would definitely go again and recommend this boat over the party boats in Clearwater.

Being a novice to Florida, I didn't realize that this kind of fishing charter even existed. I wasn't prepared to spend hundreds of dollars to go out fishing, so, when I found out that I could do this for $65.00 (US), I decided to give it a whirl.

You've got to get up early - it's fishing, after all - and get down to the dock. The scheduled departure was 8:30 AM, but, owing to the number of people fishing, you want to get their early, so as to grab a spot at the stern (back) of the boat. You're provided with a rod, tackle & bait. Your license is included, too. It's a large vessel, with a galley and room for everyone to sit, inside, while you're enroute. You can purchase breakfast and/or lunch. Beverages, including beer, are also available.

The setup, for fishing, is not ideal. When the trip is full, as was ours, you're no more than a couple of feet away from the next person. Lines getting tangled are a certainty. However, the crew are SO GOOD at what they are doing, anytime it happened - along with reel screw-ups, etc. - someone was there, immediately, to get it sorted out.

Due to the number of other people, I was, initially apprehensive about the whole venture. As it turned out, though...you catch fish! Everyone caught something. Wasn't always in season, or big enough to keep, but we took home more than enough for a great meal!

While bait is provided (squid), you can purchase specialty baits that target specific varieties of fish. Additionally, if you have your own gear, it would be better, as the stuff provided, while ok, didn't work as well as people who had their own.

I'd have to say that this was fun. Mind you, we had great weather and everyone we met was very hospitable and everything was very well run. Plan for a full day. We got back in around 4:30 PM. Dress for the outdoors and anticipate any/all types of weather.
