I went on a group bus trip to TARPON SPRINGS and decided to take the Spongorama's boat out to a little island to do some shelling (I love collecting shells).

By purchasing the boat trip, I received a coupon for 10% off or a free drink at Yianni's, right next to the dock so I had lunch before embarking. I've eaten a lot of Greek food and theirs was EXCELLENT. Makes me want to go back again real soon.

The boat trip was wonderful! I learned a lot about the history of Tarpon Springs from Theo and Antonio and we listened to island music, saw dolphins and many different kinds of water birds along the way. Cold drinks and beer were available on board for purchase. (I had a couple of Buds.)

We were give 30 minutes to enjoy the beach and pick up any shells we wanted, which was plenty of time, and there were some very nice shells there! You'll need to wear flip flops or take your shoes off which is what I did.

It was a beautiful day and the boat trip was the highlight of my time there. I highly recommend SPONGORAMA for a nice boat trip while you're in TARPON SPRINGS.

OMG best $18.95 spent ever. Had just parked, and was going to wander around TS sightseeing. Was approached and discovered that this 2 hour trip was less than $20! YES please! Lovely boat ride out to the Anclote Key reserve where the boat beached for half hour and let us wak the sandy shore in the 86 degree water shell hunting. Wonderful way to spend 2 hours. Also got us a discount in the store so I bought 2 nice sponges for myself.

I recently moved to the St. Pete area and had heard great things about Tarpon Springs. Upon arriving we were asked if we’d be interested in a dolphin/shelling tour. We are so glad we went on this ride! The captain and crew were extremely knowledgeable about the area and where the dolphins could be found as well as local info. We saw many dolphins on the cruise, and were able to get pictures and video. Then we were taken to the island for 30 min of shelling and we found the BEST shells! I found two whole sand dollars, and large in tact shells that are difficult to find on other beaches. This tour made for a perfect day!

Pros: Nice, normal people running the restaurant, boat tour and gift shop. The lunch that’s included with the cruise package is very good, with lots of choices. One of the nicest boats offering this type of tour. We got 30 minutes on Anclote Key to collect seashells. Parking is included.

Cons: We had some rough weather before boarding the boat which delayed our departure. Totally not their fault, but we waited without getting any information from the staff. That’s the only reason for 4 stars rather than 5 stars.

Final Thoughts: Good food, convenient parking, great boat tour all for less that $40 each. Also, the tickets are good for a 20% discount in the Sponge-O-Rama gift shop. It was a great day. The only thing that would’ve made it better was more communication when our boat departure was delayed. But really, you should go and spend the afternoon and see for yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

The crew was very pleasant and knowledgeable about the area. They stayed extra and helped us find the dolphins. I hope to return and do some more shelling in the future. Very satisfied!

Had a great time. Was very impressed. The crew made it very enjoyable. Liked going to the island to do sea shell gathering. The weather was perfect. It was a couple hour boat ride. This is a must. Bring a camera. The crew did point out different areas to check out.

We brought family from Ohio to see the beautiful city of Tarpon Springs and to go Dophin watching and enjoy the day on the water.

Our boat captains were awesome, giving us much history of the town, the waters, pointing out dolphin and other wildlife.

We were given about 30 minutes to also pick up shells along Anclote Key.

When you are from New Jersey & you are visiting Florida, it is a must to get on the water! We visited Tarpon Springs & were lured by Spongeorama's recruiters to take their cruise to "Shell" Island. Why not? It was a perfect sunny afternoon & we were on vacation... The crew was interesting & informative..we saw dolphins, the resident eagle & definitely collected seashells. We had a great time.. I highly recommend this trip!

Definitely take the 2 hour cruise to break up your day visiting Tarpon Springs sponge docks. The crew did a nice job to make sure you had an opportunity to see dolfins smd other wildlife if possible. They take you to an island to do some shelling for 30 minutes. Very nice break from going through tourist shops. We really enjoyed the cruise.

We took this cruise on 4/7/2018 and booked ahead online. The online reservation was for an 11:00 cruise, and said to arrive 60 minutes before. When we did, we were given tickets with a hand-written boarding time of "11:15". We killed a little time and then went to wait for boarding around 11:05. We sat... and sat... and sat. At 11:30, a man came out and began to load things on the boat. Upon being asked if he was planning to set sail soon, he said, "Not for awhile." More passengers began arriving, with a boarding time of "11:45" written on their tickets. The captain returned and said we would be leaving at noon, because he was "waiting for the wind to die down." (The day's forecast called for winds to increase throughout the day, so that made no sense.) We finally boarded around 11:50, and sat while the ticket desk continued to sell more tickets to passersby. We finally left a little after 12. It was clear they held the boat in order to sell more tickets, and did so without bothering to communicate with any of the passengers waiting to embark, which was very frustrating.

The cruise was pleasant, though the "narrated" part was very minimal. Fortunately, we are locals and could tell our guests more about what they were seeing. The time on the island was lovely, as always, and on the return, the captain detoured to look at dolphins nearby, which was nice. However, no one provided any information about what we were seeing regarding the dolphin behavior, or any of the other wildlife except pointing out an active osprey nest.

We used to take a similar boat ride with a company called "Sun Line Cruises" out of Tarpon Springs, with excellent narration by a naturalist and good customer service. However, their website now re-directs to Spongorama's Cruise Lines, so perhaps they've been bought out? At any rate, this cruise is now pleasant enough if you're not concerned with actually leaving on time, and not interested in actual narration about the things you're seeing. We've seen dolphins every time we've been out on a similar trip over the years, so consider that likely though not guaranteed. Anclote Key is always worth the brief visit, and if you like boat rides, you'll probably like this one. Just know that this is not quite the same ride that Sun Line Cruises used to run.
