I have some mixed feelings about our stay, because overall the room was clean and well appointed for a mid priced hotel. The free breakfast was on the more minimalist side of free breakfasts, but it served its purpose. Check in was pretty painless.

But there were two notable irritants ...

One was a frustration I have often had at these kinds of hotels where you check in around dinner time, or later, and then discover something wrong with the room. In this case it was the bathroom sink that was draining at a snail's pace. I told the front desk about it and they said the engineers were gone for the day so she could send them up tomorrow. By tomorrow we'd be checked out so that wasn't really much of a solution. That was irritation number one.

Irritation number two was a sound coming through one wall of the room. This sound at first sounded like what could best be described as a demonic alarm clock - you know the kind with that pulsing, shrieking buzz designed to rattle your ears into awakedness, and the kind that makes your arm swing for the snooze button like Muhammad Ali for Joe Frazier in the 'Thrilla in Manila'.

We called down to the front desk assuming the room next door had left their alarm clock running. Brandy was very nice and responsive and said she'd check it out. About 15 minutes later it was still going so we called down again. Brandy said she had come up and couldn't hear anything. So I asked if she could come up to our room and have a listen for herself. She did.

When she got there she agreed it was a horribly irritating sound and admitted she'd not be able to sleep if that sound persisted through the night. but she explained there was no room next to us (turns out it was the vending machine room) and she suggested it was the vending machine making the noise. Upon further inspection it was not the vending machine, but a room next to the vending machine which housed what she called the 'broiler'. I suspect it was actually a boiler, or boiler pump, because that helped me dial in on the sound, and it was like that of an electric motor bearing going bad, with that high speed grinding sound pulsing over and over again.

Brandy offered for us to change rooms, and you know how frustrating that can be once you have unpacked and spread yourself out in a room, but I agreed to go check out the new room just in case I'd be changing out one bad room for another. It was fine, though it had an aroma of someone who had either done a lot of smoking in it at some time a while ago, or someone had done a little smoking more recently. We decided not to change rooms and hoped to weather the demonic alarm clock sound next door, but Brandy had done what she could to assuage our frustrations and credited half of our room rate for the night.

Fortunately we were all tired enough that we were able to get to sleep through the racket next door, though I do think it affected us some. So beware the 'demons' of room #204, but otherwise we'd probably stay there again.

Room Tip: Avoid #204, or perhaps any of those next to the vending machine room.

This hotel is awesome. Rooms are clean and neat. Beds are comfortable. TV and WiFi are good. Staff is polite and helpful. Very reasonable price. There are many restaurants near by and it is near Busch Gardens. Breakfast is good.

Having a son just beginning school at USF, in Tampa, I have tried a few different hotels in the area. This LaQuinta is nearly across from the main way in! PEFECT location to USF. Also - much nicer than others in the area - tropical area, pool, hot tub all outside and very inviting. BEST of all - go on line and find coupons. I saved $15 and was thrilled!

La Quinta generally gets a bad rap, but I have stayed twice at the USF hotel and have had a very nice experience. The rooms are clean and big and the outdoor pool area is very nice. I would definitely recommend this hotel. The price is generally lower than the the other ones in the area. I'm generally a hotel snob and this past the mustard.
