WOW! What a wonderful restaurant tucked away at the International Plaza in Tampa. Next time you are at the mall and want some great food and wine stop in! Jayne, our server, is extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the wine list. Her recommendations were EXCELLENT. I very much appreciated her insight into the specials and the appetizers. The food quality is outstanding. The ambiance is perfect for a date or a group of friends who like to relax and enjoy a leisurely dining experience.

The menu is divine. The food lives up to its prices. Then you get the diner-style service from a poorly trained staff, and suddenly the surprise gem is no longer such.

I've visited Pelagia several times, so this is feedback based on multiple experiences. The taste/quality of the food brings me back -- as does the faint hope that perhaps the wait staff has turned over.

Some of the service flaws:

| Calling guests "honey" -- sorry, this is inappropriate and in poor taste when you have $20-30 meals on the menu and the restaurant has nothing to do with being a down-home type of place
| Addressing guests from across the room -- it greatly reduces the quality of the dining experience when you're asked if everything's okay from two tables away
| Wait staff chit-chats -- totally OK to do in private; not so great just inches from tables
| Not knowing he menu -- to not know if the lamb comes with a sweet versus savory sauce is ridiculous; the sauce is one of the driving forces of this dish. Servers should taste all menu items and retain memory of them
| Not mentioning specials -- if your menu clearly has holes (such as Risotto of the Day), fill them in when you visit the table
| Rushing -- a great dining experience takes a bit of time. It's better to ask "Are you ready to order?" than "What can I get ya?"

I could go on. Sometimes it's a training issue; sometimes it's a hiring issue, hiring people who are better suited for a different type of service environment. Whatever the issue, I hope it's corrected. Pelagia has the chops (pun intended, as the lamb chops are terrific!) to be a FANTASTIC Tampa dining destination for both visitors AND locals if it didn't take for granted its location.

I make restaurant recommendations often, and this is one I'm hesitant to mention. Its recommendation ALWAYS comes with the service caveat. I say visit, but request the best server on staff.

Managers of Pelagia: Please hug your chefs but ANALYZE YOUR WAIT STAFF.

We ate there twice. The first time, we went for dinner and my lamb chops were lousy. The second time, we went for lunch and my veal sandwich had a weird after taste. If you're staying at the hotel this restaurant's in, just walk outside and up the steps to International Mall and walk into an Italian restaurant, "Brio". It'll blow Pelagia Trattoria away. For that matter, Capitol Grill is also there and is way better, as well as even The Cheesecake Factory's also there, and the food is better.

On a recent trip, I decided to have dinner here one night. Glad I did! It was really nice. Service was decent. It was a bit of a surprise to find a waitress who couldn't really answer any of my questions about the wine list, and didn't volunteer to find someone who could. But that aside, it was nice.
They served a nice selection of house made breads with olive tapenade. Yummy! I ordered the crunchy stuffed olives with 3 meats. Never figured out what the meats were..... These were fried olives -- tasty, and different. For dinner, I had the Scallops. These were to die for! They made the experience --- blend of flavors was excellent! You got 4 or 5 really big scallops. I also decided to finish the night with dessert. I choose the dark chocolate flourless mousse cake with pistachio gelato. Wow! Flavors were great and this wasn't a really heavy dessert! Overall, really nice. Dinners were in the $20-30 range. Starters were 5-7 and desserts were about 8.
