SS American Victory Mariners' Memorial and Museum Ship

We went to see the Merchant Marine ship American Victory docked at the Tampa port (right behind the Florida Aquarium) This is supposed to be a museum ship full of exhibits etc. What it actually is ….a dirty old tin can, rusty, VERY HOT with a ton of stale air. You wander through alone and see a bunch of dirty sleep quarters with signs on the door as to what room it was (these were the exhibits) - waste of time and money. We were very disappointed

AMVIC, Education Department Head at SS American Victory Mariners' Memorial and Museum Ship, responded to this reviewResponded July 13, 2007

We regret that some visitors will not find the SS American Victory a pristine attraction.

It is over 60 years old, has been restored to date, completely by volunteers, and is run by volunteers without any financial or physical assistance from any government agency.

Each month the ship comes closer to our goal of a exciting attraction.

The current tours of the ship are listed as "Restoration Tours", meaning the ship is in the process of being restored to it's historical condition.

Visitors should realize that World War II ships were not air conditioned. The men and women who served on them endured the exact same conditions a visitor experiences on the American Victory today.

The ship is a historical land mark, and it's restoration will restore it to what it was in 1945 when it was built.

Visitors who are interested is seeing and experiencing what the veterans of WW-II, Korea, and Vietnam experienced aboard these ships
will find the experience true to life.
