The place is a Tampa institution. It's packed to the walls from about 1130am to 2pm, so plan accordingly or order well ahead (a good half hour) by phone for carry out. Famous for their Devil crabs and potato balls (cooked, seasoned, ground beef, rolled in mashed potatoes to make a fist sized ball, roll in bread crumbs, deep fry until golden,) they also have terrific sandwiches sold in different sizes (include drink and chips in price) and classic latin plates like roast pork with black beans and rice. The food id good, the atmosphere ok, the lines are always long but that only happens when what you get is so good.

A friend asked me to describe Brocato's Sandwich Shop. I found it difficult to explain....The atmosphere didn't feel like a typical spot in Tampa. My only explanation was: "It felt like NYC". Fast pace, quality food, long lines, and always packed with guest. I think that pretty much summed it up.

Brocato's is Tampa history in a sandwich. From the road it may not look like much, but inside you'll find decades of pictures of the people who have chowed down on empenadas, devil crab, and Cuban sandwiches. You will NOT leave hungry!
My party enjoyed a Buffalo Chicken Sandwich, an Italian sandwich, and a Cuban -- all were very generously sized (not the usual thin layer of meat at other joints), and the "side" of black beans & rice easily weighed one if not two pounds.

This is the kind of place you'd see on "Diners Drive-Ins & Dives" on Food Network -- local, delicious, and unique!

This is one place I would miss if I ever moved away. You can experience the best cuban sandwiches, deviled crabs and stuffed potatos that Tampa has to offer. I love the consistant high quality food that they put out on a daily basis. I have never been disapointed. The place is always crowded and there is a small area that you can actually sit down and eat but we usually take our order to go. Recently they changed the pickles on the great cuban sandwiches but every thing else is the same as years ago. Huge devil crabs full of crabmeat, sprinkled with hot sauce these are a meal in itself. Stuffed potatoes are also large and crispy on the outside and full of a wonderful tasting ground beef mixture with creamy buttery potato surrounding are a real treat, enough to share but you will not want to.

First off, expect to wait a LONG time for your food. The wait is not due to slow staff, it is because the line is almost always out the door. Call ahead ordering is available, but call ahead at least an hour, and then u may still have to wait.

But is the wait worth it- a resounding YES! Every sandwich is made to order, they are filled with meat and very large!! Wonderful goodness of fresh bread, solid ingredients and flavorful meat. The Cuban sandwich is fantastic, but so are the others.

Do yourself a favor and order the Deviled Crab! It is filled with crab, very few if any fillers, and cooked perfectly.

The best part of this Tampa landmark is that it is still family owned and operated. It is run with love and they do a fantastic job!

Go by, enjoy the wait and get ready to savor some wonderful Cuban inspired food!
