Breakfast was simple but good. Cafe con leche was done right along withy the obligatory pressed Cuban toast with butter. The rest was also a simple eggs with bacon. Again done right. Service was friendly. Good place for breakfast. Would go back to see how lunch is.

Was recommended La Tropicana for breakfast. Nice cuban atmosphere and good bread. The place looks very friendly. Was surprised that it was a cash only place.

I've been coming to La Tropicana for 25years now for lunch. NEWSFLASH - the only thing that's changed is they now serve Fountain soda when long ago, you got a Diet Coke in a can. Folks, the carpet is probably the same. Everything's the same. When in Ybor, do you want to eat where the locals eat or where the tourists eat? I'll drive 1 hour for their Potato Balls and a Cuban Sandwich and have done so for decades. This isn't a chain restaurant sub shop ...A cuban sandwich isn't piled high with a bunch of stuff on it...it's a Pressed sandwich!! Meat, cheese, a couple of pickles and Cuban bread - it's not supposed to be on a sub roll! Try to find Cuban bread at your local midwestern supermarket. Sure it could use a good scrubbing, what Mom and Pop place doesn't? Guy Fieri needs to come to La Tropicana with his show Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. I judge a good local place to eat if the local cops would eat there, and if you're ever there at lunch time, the lunch crowd is usually made up of them. One suggestion: Take home a bag of Potato Balls or Deviled Crab (about the size of little footballs)...but ask them to double bag them......and who cares that they only take cash? That keeps costs low and they're not passing on what the Credit Card companies charge them just to swipe cards. ATM is 4 steps away from the cash register, it's really no big deal....really.

Sure, go ahead and try that chain restaurant tourist place with the fancy white linen and guys in tuxes to wait on the people that come in the tourist buses, it's good there too....but THIS is where the locals go for food.

We have eaten here quite a few times but the place has gone down hill. A dead roach in the ladies bathroom, carpeting is shabby and threadbare. The place really needs a complete makeover. The Cuban is nothing really to write home about. I prefer the Cuban at the Columbia. They don't take credit cards. A general feeling of everything being dirty.

Had coffee here, (cafe con leche) which was quite strong. We only sampled the menu a little, tried the cheese bread and the kettle chips, both of which were good. Next time will try the Cubanos and stuffed potatoes. The staff is friendly and personable, and the prices are very affordable.
