Good for: Local cuisine
Dining options: Late Night, Outdoor Seating
Description: Now celebrating 34 smokin' years, this venerable Tampa Bay landmark was purchased by three Air Force buddies in 1980 who met while stationed in Alaska and presumably sought to get as far away from the frozen tundra as possible. In the years since, Skipper's has grown from a small smokehouse takeout operation with a casual Sunday jam to a full-service restaurant and much-loved purveyor of world-class music. The architecture is a smorgasbord of "cracker" and islandy-Key West styles with overturned boats, wooden walkways, large murals dot the landscape while artfully rusted walls contain the sounds of revelry. In the Oyster Bar, a vintage moonshine still hangs over the bar while in the dining room, weathered posters tinted by neon lights add varying hues of color and atmosphere.

Very "laid back" place for good entertainment and a large variety of snack foods Outdoor customer seating or just walk around and mingle with the crowd. Full bar.

I have previously reviewed Skipper's as a musical venue. There is no doubt that Skipper's is our #1 destination in Tampa for live music, BUT...

... I will never eat there again. Their food is greasy, poorly prepared, and unpleasantly sauced. It's also served up at the tables with plastic utensils and in or on styrofoam containers and plates. I couldn't believe that the St. Louis Ribs I'd ordered, were overcooked and dry (even though they were smothered in a disgusting sauce). They also came to the table with sinews intact that were plain inedible. All of the sauces were bland, indistinct, and unappetizing. And, to top it off, I was sick from our dinner there for a good (actually bad) 24 hours afterwards.

Sadly, it was because of the positive reviews here at TripAdvisor that we even decided to eat at Skipper's before moving outside to "The Skipperdome" for the blues concert we had come to see-- The Selwyn Birchwood Band. Next time, we'll eat first somewhere else, and then go to Sipper's for the music.

Skipper's is, indeed, one of a kind. The restaurant/bar is kind of a labyrinth to get through. I've now been there a few times and can find my way. Skipper's food can be interesting.....I've had fried oysters and they're great. But I find the food to be quite pricey and lots of fried food.

If you want to see the band, you have an entrance fee. They give you a band that lets you hop back and forth from bar, restaurant and performance. These are usually "alternative to alternative" bands, and the music can be quite good. I think it is a one-of-a kind venue. I think it's worth going and making your own assessment of the place. (don't be put off by it's appearance)

The clientele is varied from students, to 'old hippies' and everything in between. People get so caught up in the music they get up and dance....all kinds of dance styles.....very fun. At the very least you can get up and 'move your body".

Summation: try it. My husband and I have decided to attend band, NOT eat there and limit ourselves to one or two drinks.

Skippers is a one-of-a-kind true Florida food and music experience. If you are looking for polished, upscale ambiance, stop reading now and move on to other options. But, if you want great "Old Florida" seafood shack meets backwater blues charm, you need to experience Skipper's!!! Nothing fancy about this place and that is exactly the point. Keep it simple with steamed Shrimp, an excellent Grouper Reuben, and some of the best fresh Onion Rings you will find, and your meal will be mouth watering excellent. If you are looking for live blues, reggae, roots rock, etc., there is no better place to find it in the entire Tampa Bay area. Check out the website for who is scheduled (and to learn about this place before you go), at www.skipperssmokehouse.com. Then put on your shorts, sandals and best music festival T-shirt, and get ready for a great true Florida food and music experience!

This place is wonderful place for all. Great music and fun times. Try everything: gator ribs or sampler platter are worth note. Grateful dead tribute every Thursday and showcase nights for local bands!
