Free manatee viewing, how can you beat that? These cute little sea cows were all hanging around by the pier that stretches out from the visitor center / gift shop. We waited around the wooden deck viewing spot for 20 minutes and didn't see any, so we wandered around a bit and noticed that you can walk out on a pier. THAT is where the little guys were hanging out!

Photo tip... try to go on a really sunny day, that way the shallow water will be more see-through. If you have one, attach a polarizing filter (or hold one up) which will reduce the glare from the sun on the water. They come up for air about every 2-5 minutes, so if you follow one in your viewfinder for a few minutes, you can catch it's little nose as it springs up for a breath.

Hope these creatures make it in the long haul and that we humans don't become their demise. Thanks to the electric plant for making this part of their plant free to the public.

This was a really neat attraction. We went on a day off from our business trip. It was windy and cold so we didn't stay long but they had a great viewing area with an informational recording playing all around the viewing area telling you about the local plants and animals. We didn't go into the gift shop but I'm sure it was nice. They had a mini learning center for kids as well. Overall a really neat attraction and it was FREE! You can't beat that with a stick!

After a rough weekend in the Clearwater area, we decided to spend the last of our time heading over to this manatee viewing area. We've seen manatees in a few locations in FL but this one had the most by far. There are two viewing areas, with the best one being the one away from the buildings (I think it was called the tidal walk area). From there, you could look across the water and see dozens of manatee at a distance. There were also a number that were swimming closer to the viewing area along with numerous large fish.

Overall, the highlight of our recent trip to the Tampa-Clearwater area.

I had no idea what to expect in coming here but it was so crowded with cars parked everywhere. Manatees were nice but not very active while we were there so you only got to see their shadow in the water and an occasional nose coming up for air. It was a nice experience but was pretty far from downtown, so I'd only suggest if you have time for a long round trip ride.
