Owner description: Experience 12,000 years of powerful stories at the Tampa Bay History Center. During your journey, you will stroll through a 1920s-era cigar store, row up the Hillsborough River, ride along with a cattle drive and learn about the early exploration of Florida. This waterfront building, with an eclectic Museum Store and the signature Columbia Cafe, is a memorable experience for families, history enthusiasts, Tampa area natives and beyond.

If you are looking for a couple hours break from the sunshine then give this place a visit. We found it reasonably interesting but have been to better museum type venues, Not a lot more to say really.

Nice building and good, solid exhibits on Tampa Bay history including displays on Native Americans; the cigar, cattle and citrus industries; and Tampa's sports teams and contributions to the war efforts throughout American history. There is a nice audiovisual presentation about the Native Americans and their interactions with the Europeans/Americans. There can be large school groups visiting at times, but they seem to stay with the docents and "regular" visitors can manuever around the groups easily. A Columbia Cafe shares the building and offers good food and a sunny spot to have lunch. An adjacent park offers kids a place to play if they need to run around after demonstrating good museum behavior.

The Tampa History Center is well worth a 2-3 hour visit for visitors of all ages. It is expertly designed and presented around the principal activities of the city/area from early Native Americans to the present. Numerous docents enhance the experience. The only shortcoming noted was the small mention of MacDill AFB and its very significantrole in the development of the community since WWII, including command of US force in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

We practially had the museum to ourselves as we arrived about 2 hours after a "weather related event" (probably a water spout) that had touched down in the Tampa Bay area.... we enjoyed learning about the area...... the cigar making information and background on Ybor City were particularly well done.... there is a beautiful replica bar overlooking the Bay that makes a great stop after touring around.....

This is a nice museum, but to be honest, we did not enjoy this as much as we expected based on the previous reviews. We found it on the dry, boring side. They have some nice artifacts but it wasn't all that interesting. If you are from Florida or are particularly interested in Florida history, you might enjoy this museum more than we did. It is right next to the riverwalk - if you park next to the museum and pay admission, they'll validate your parking and then you can easily walk the riverwalk. If you have a little time to kill before a flight like we did, this isn't a bad stop - spend an hour or so in the museum, then do the riverwalk.
