Owner description: Experience 12,000 years of powerful stories at the Tampa Bay History Center. During your journey, you will stroll through a 1920s-era cigar store, row up the Hillsborough River, ride along with a cattle drive and learn about the early exploration of Florida. This waterfront building, with an eclectic Museum Store and the signature Columbia Cafe, is a memorable experience for families, history enthusiasts, Tampa area natives and beyond.

We practially had the museum to ourselves as we arrived about 2 hours after a "weather related event" (probably a water spout) that had touched down in the Tampa Bay area.... we enjoyed learning about the area...... the cigar making information and background on Ybor City were particularly well done.... there is a beautiful replica bar overlooking the Bay that makes a great stop after touring around.....

This is a nice museum, but to be honest, we did not enjoy this as much as we expected based on the previous reviews. We found it on the dry, boring side. They have some nice artifacts but it wasn't all that interesting. If you are from Florida or are particularly interested in Florida history, you might enjoy this museum more than we did. It is right next to the riverwalk - if you park next to the museum and pay admission, they'll validate your parking and then you can easily walk the riverwalk. If you have a little time to kill before a flight like we did, this isn't a bad stop - spend an hour or so in the museum, then do the riverwalk.

The TBHC is the jewel of Tampa. A really unique museum covering the history of Florida from its earliest inhabitants to the current day. A great place to spend the day. Be sure to eat at the Columbia Cafe and have a Mojito or Sangria to make it a perfect compliment to a very entertaining day. Lots of everything for the whole family.

This museum helps to anchor a great and largely non-commercial Riverwalk. The exhibits give a fine sense of the development of Tampa and this part of Florida. I was especially impressed with a series of large outdoor plaques that document the numerous Indian wars and Indian displacements that characterized U.S.colonialization of the town and area. There is now greater sympathy for the struggle of the Native Americans to be just left alone and of their courageous though unsuccessful battle to avoid displacement. It is interesting to note that this was an early version of guerilla warfare and to see documentation the ups and dowms of U.S. military adventures there. The museum avoids a black and white explanation of this history with a nod to all sides' views of the wars. Eventually, the Indians were pushed out of the area and herded into reservations with a few thousand warriors refusing internment and retreating to the Everglades for a long last stand.
